California Doing California Things

Swalwell officially resigns from congress

Eric Swalwell has officially left Congress, announcing in a statement that his resignation took effect at 2pm ET on Tuesday. The beleaguered lawmaker said that he would work with his staff to ensure that his constituents’ needs are met in the coming days. This comes after another accuser, Lonna Drewes, alleged that Swalwell drugged and raped her in 2018. The California representative was facing an expulsion vote had he not stepped down today. Swalwell has denied allegations against him.
At a press conference in Los Angeles, Drewes accused Eric Swalwell on Tuesday of drugging her and raping her in 2018.
“On the third occasion, I believe he drugged my drink,” Drewes said. “I only had one glass of wine.”
She went on to detail that he allegedly raped her and choked her, and she lost consciousness.
“I did not consent to any sexual activity,” she said.

The incident happened in 2018 and only now she brings it to light?

I feel like the Swalwell conversation may be deserving of its own thread. It's looking like it involves a lot more than "California things" at this point?

Now in the vein of actual California things, we topped the list in a competition no one wants to win, this week:

California has slowest EMS response times to fatal crashes in America, study finds

The study found the average EMS response time to a fatal car crash nationwide was exactly 10 minutes. A LendingTree expert, Lindsay Bishop, explained that 10-minute response times is “on the slower side” of what officials aim for.
...

In California, however, the study found that a lot more time elapses between notification and arrival: on average, it takes 19.6 minutes for EMS to get to the scene of a fatal crash – the longest among states with available data.

I blame L.A.

Police and CHP should be way harder on people who refuse to yield right-of-way, though. Have dashcams on every EMS vehicle and mail a ticket to every last jerk who fails to get out of the way.

California seems to win a lot of competitions that no one wants to win. :pouting:

So is it that you believe Republicans and Democrats should be held to different standards of justice, or that all rapists should go free? You aren't making a very consistent point, here.
Huh? Your interpretation is completely divorced from what I actually wrote. And I am being consistent.
I never said anything about different standards for Republicans and Democrats.
I never said that "all rapists should go free". But neither should people be assumed to be "rapists" just because there is an allegation.
You are complaining about being misattributed... while then misattributing a position onto others. After fifteen plus years of this shit, it'd be nice if you stopped that.
I do not know if Swallwell is guilty or innocent. But he should not be presumed guilty just because that fits the radfem narrative.
Hasn't Swallwell only be accused of having affairs, which may have involved improper abuse of authority/power? Not rape.
And it is curious that these allegations are surfacing as his candidacy was picking up steam.
That is typically how it happens.
He's been accused of rape since news about him first broke here on this thread:

Why should they rush when the people are already dead?

THIS WOMAN IS CLEARLY A LYING WHORE! IF SHE CAN'T PROVIDE THREE KINDS OF PROOF SHE SHOULD GO TO JAIL FOR IMPUGNING THIS MAN'S HONOR!!!

ALSO, why don't more women feel comfortable accusing their employers of rape? We're so reasonable about it!
Who has said anything close to that?! Here or elsewhere? You're just making stuff up again.

What are you talking about? Swallwell's career has been utterly destroyed just based on uncorroborated accusations.

Then you have your answer. Most women don't report, because most men are like you. You hear that four women have accused the same man of rape, and you think, wow! How does that guy know so many dishonest harlots?

I am astonished at how many times I see people apparently totally oblivious to an emergency vehicle with lights and sirens, coming up right behind them as they dawdle along.

I think the punishment should fit the crime - if you block an ambulance, you get your legs broken; If you block a fire engine, you get to watch while your house is burned down.

I'm willing to guess that the majority of rape cases, that aren't out of the blue stranger cases, never come to light.

It’s hard to avoid the conclusion that there is something to such allegations. Yes, it is possible all these women are crazy or nefarious deceivers, but that seems much less probable than at least one of them is telling the truth.

I don’t think anyone should be a career politician, but such allegations didn’t stop Trump. Mr Stalkwell’s career may be temporarily or permanently altered, but people like him tend to land on their feet. Just ask Matt Gaetz.

So during the height of the #metoo frenzy, where women were encouraged to come forward with exactly these types of scenarios, this woman couldn’t come forward? A little odd in my opinion.

Yeah, his career probably isn't over. Unless he actually gets convicted.

… in which case he can run for President as a Republican, and probably win.
Depends how quickly he can make friends with Trump. Trump pardons are this nation's most valuable social commodity. If I were Swalwell, I'd be writing my first NY Times op ed right now. "I used to be as Woke as anyone..."
