Star Trek Discovery?

Umm... maybe you haven't noticed, but Fox doesn't question anything that Seth MacFarlene does since Family Guy came back. He could pitch a show about watching paint dry while he makes some stupid quips... and Fox would green light it. Really, that is the only explanation for Family Guy still being on.

Not quite. American Dad was shuffled off to basic cable awhile back...
It was on Fox Network for 9 seasons!
and the Family Guy spinoff The Cleveland Show had a pretty short life.
I wish Firefly went 4 seasons.

Orville is also a lot more expensive than an animated show, I'm guessing.

Discovery, on the other hand, has already been renewed for a second season.
CBS's streaming network is die without Discovery.... it might die even with it, seeing CBS isn't planning 52 episode seasons.

I watched some Voyager episodes. Still holding up compared to Discovery.

This latest Mudd episode... or "Muddisode"... was a twist on the old scifi trope. And a bad twist. If stamets is the only one outside the time loop, why wasn't the story told from his perspective? Instead we had to suffer through a goddamn frat party at the ship and the most awkward romantic subplot ever. Oh and Ash is a traitor, I'm sure of it now.

Also, why are the controls for the Captain's chair a non-critical system? It seems to be that they should be fairly critical.

Do you mean the controls for the chair itself, or the controls one accesses from the chair?

It was the controls that the Captain accesses. They altered the chair's programming so that when Mudd tried to call the Klingons, he called the guys who were looking for him instead. They were able to do this because Mudd's overrides of the computers only locked them out of critical systems and the commands that the Captain gives from his chair were somehow deemed "non-critical".

Typically those controls are just to change what they are watching on Netflix.

Have you ever traveled at warp for several hours in front of a small console that isn't flashing or beeping? You need Netflix!

If only there was a button on the captain's chair to change the reviews of the series from critical to non-critical.

Watched episode 7 tonight. I think that if Harry Mudd had done that, in TOS Mudd's Women would have a record of it. Timeline violation.

So what's with the spore drive guy saying he lives outside of the timeline? WTF.

And this time loop idea they stole from TNG.

At least some of the characters are acting less like assholes. But none are actually very likeable yet. And the acting is crappy.

The show still sucks. I wonder if the kids will tire of it? My most diehard son has started talking negative about the show.

Is "timeline violation" even a crime? At this time they hadn't even invented time travel yet. And how would you prove it? For all anyone except Stamets knows Mudd showed up in Enterprise for half an hour, called his ex, and went away. Nothing criminal there.

Watched tonight. Same old..

So what's the deal? Next week is the last new episode until January?

Oh goody. I get to pay for 2 months for nothing.

I have season 3 of Hogan's Heros on DVD around and showed it to the kids. They love it. A huge hit. Hogan's Heros was a CBS show but All Access doesn't have it. What ripoff...

Sounds like it would make sense to wait until the series has finished, then get CBS All Access for one month to binge it.

STD is pretty bad. It has some good ideas, but those seem to be isolated cases and they never dwell on those ideas, but instead drop them and concentrate on something utterly meaningless. Like the last episode, where the Pahvians decide to "help" the Federation by calling Klingons so that the two can settle their disagreements. As an idea, that's actually pretty novel and it would be interesting to see where it goes. But what does the episode focus on? Michael's first kiss. Which we dealt with in last episode also. Yawn.

Anyone else watching the after-show? Am I imagining or are they adding more tribbles to the set every week?

Anyway, apart from the clumsy romance that Michael is having with Beardy McBeardface, who is obviously a working for Klingons, one of the things that's bugged me since first episode is the opening title. It's got great music, nice visuals, and I wouldn't mind watching it every week... except for the ending. Why did they feel the need to break the rhythm and add the classic Star Trek tune at the end? It doesn't fit with the rest of the song, it seems liek something that the producers said they should have so someone jammed it in there. It doesn't work. The way to do a homage is to start with the original theme and then take it to the new direction. Like the Wonder Woman intro, which I've seen probably a million times. It starts with the Wonder Woman theme from Batman vs. Superman, but then quickly switches to the vastly superior music of the actual movie. Or if anyone remembers the new Knight Rider music, that started with the old tune and then took it to someone new. Not necessarily better (and the show sucked as well), but at least it was different. Star Trek Discovery intro not only fails to respect the original, it also pulls the rug underneath the talented people who made the new opening credits sequence.

Oh, great. Now I have the original Knight Rider theme tune stuck in my head.

Thanks

And this is how you get it out:

The copyright holder doesn't want me to watch a video of the intro to this show. Must not be very good.
That's understandable, I'd be embarrassed too if I was the creator of the 2008 Knight Rider.

There was a 2008 Knight Rider? I remember when they tried a Knight Rider clone called Viper... that didn't work... it doesn't sound like the Knight Rider '08 thing worked either. There was something novel about a talking car in the 80s.... not so novel these days, much more typical than novel.

Driver: Siri, I need to fire the missiles at that truck.
Siri: Sorry, I can't find the song Fire the missiles at that truck.
Driver: No, we are trying to stop those bad guys. We need to launch the missiles.
Siri: Looking up Chekov's nuclear vessels.
Driver: What?!
Siri: I'm downloading a funny cat video for you to watch.

So, the half-season finale... semifinale? Is there a name for it? ... was slightly better than the usual episodes, not as good as the premier episodes though.

I liked the development of the klingon defector chick and the cliffhanger hopefully leads into something interesting. But as usual, it just doesn't move fast enough. More explanation about the spore drive, come on, we know already about the alternate dimensions because you teased us with that mirror image and the mistake of Tilly being a captain (I do hope we'll get see the alternate reality where that's true). Get on with it already, STD!

What I didn't like was that the plot made no sense, in so many different ways. So the plan is that they want to see through the Klingon cloaking device; and for this to work, they need to get the ship to uncloak, then they transport people into the ship, who'll have to install sensors that transmit some data to Discovery, which Discovery will analyse from every angle by making a bunch of small jumps around the cloaked ship, so that they can shoot it down.

Why not just forget the cloaking device, and just transport a few bombs into the ship in the first place? This is so obvious, that why would Klingons not have any defenses against people transporting into their ship to bring mysterious blinking devices? And even so, why not just shoot the ship to pieces as soon as it decloaked because obviously Discovery had the firepower to do so. And the devices that hide ichael and Beardy's human life signs from the Klingon ship, if the ship could really do that, why did the Klingons think the admiral was dead? Wouldn't the ship detect her life signs? And how fucking stupid do the Klingons have to be to stay put just because Michale challenged the captain? Can't they travel at warp speed and have a duel to the death at the same time? Aren't they at least a little bit suspicious that Michael shows up just as they are about to leave?

Aaaargh.

Blowing up the ship in and of itself is not enough--the Discovery needs to get the details on the cloaking tech so the Federation can defeat the other Klingon ship that have the cloaking tech. Other than that, I agree with your critique.
