DNC - Convention in Philadelpia - Are you ready to Rock?

People in this country are hurting, be they Democrat or Republican and politics as usual WILL NOT and CAN NOT address the problems of 90% of the population. Hillary Clinton has been running for the 2016 DP Nomination for POTUS since November 2008 and she still almost lost to a democratic socialist with little name recognition, no super pacs, and donations averaging $27 a pop. Trump is the GOP nominee not because he offers solutions but because he voices anger born of fear for millions of Americans who have no idea where their futures lie. There has been a shift in the movement this country and anyone who wants to truly lead this country had better get in front of it or be run over by it.

Sure, Trump is very good at playing off people's fear. He's a master manipulator. But he's not going to be solving any real problems. And he could do quite a lot of harm.....

I had been on the fence this election, but the unassailable wisdom of Hollywood entertainers has won me over.

yep. for the life of me i don't understand why otherwise really smart people just don't seem to get that this election, and maybe the next few, is anout pissed off, frustrated people that don't know what else to do since no matter who they've elected in the past things have only gotten worse for them.

And that might be just what people want. They're thinking, "hey, if the system is going to keep working against me then why not just burn the motherfucker down?"

And Trump has brought the gas and a match.

The thing is - and I understand this is purely anecdotal on my part - all the Trump supporters I know are not being overly burdened by "the system." They're all white middle class males who live in nice neighborhoods, have good jobs, and while a couple may have been caught flat-footed by the recession have done alright since. This whole dystopian fantasy world Trump has created where roving bands of Mexican rapists, terrorists, and Hillary Clintons not only doesn't exist, but no Trump supporter I know lives in it.

They're angry at illegal immigrants for taking jobs, but nobody I know picks produce or cleans hotel rooms for a living. They're angry about crime, but none of them live in crime-ridden places. They're upset about gay marriage and "political correctness" but near as I can tell haven't been negatively impacted by either. From where I sit, Trump is selling anger to people who on balance have no real reason to be angry at all.

I think a decent fraction of Trump supporters want to go back to some 50s era living, when jobs were plentiful, women stayed at home, and minorities knew their place. "Make America Great Again". When do you think they think it was "great"?

The Republican establishment hasn't delivered on that, despite talking it up for so long. Most likely because they are either in the pocket of the rich, who don't care about most of those things, or are ultra-religious and have their own priorities. The Republican establishment lost touch with their base. You can see the priorities of the GOP electorate by focusing on only those things Trump said that were different from what any of the other umpteen GOP candidates said. They weren't too different, but think about the differences. There's the heart of it.

These are great graphs that do a wonderful job pointing out the Great Recession. I like how the worker's share of the economy declined a lot after the George W. Bush tax cuts. Also the Health Insurance costs and Home Ownership graphs don't have the same horizontal extents. And labor force participation... for fucks sake! The Baby Boomers are retiring.

I do have one question, what is the Student Loan chart showing?

Despite the similar trends in youth, prime-age and pre-retirement participation rates, the U.S. is the only country in our sample experiencing a recent decline in the aggregate labor force participation rate. This is explained mostly by a larger-than-average drop in the labor force participation of prime-age males, a decrease in the participation of prime-age women and a lower-than-average increase in the participation of pre-retirement-age workers in the U.S. economy.

Yeah. It's not like Obama has been president for nearly eight years or anything. But the point of the graphs is that politics as usual isn't going to change things. Clinton has been part federal government, on way or another, since 1993. Why would anyone think that electing her would make any difference whatsoever? For those who have longed for the anti-establishment candidate to upend the system, Trump is it. He may not be what you envisioned, but, paradoxically, a forest needs a fire from time to time to stay healthy.

...is to pretend that Obama owns the Great Recession. The charts are lying via statistics. Yes, the economy has not returned to 90's boom levels. Is it even possible for that to happen so quickly after a substantial recession?

Why would anyone think that electing Trump would make it better? Because he says so? And, to extend your forest analogy, who is going to raise the country from the ashes after Trump burns it down? What are Trump supporters willing to sacrifice for an unknown future potential good that could come of it?

Trausti seems to be saying that electing Trump won't make it better. He'll just burn everything to the ground and then it will get better when the country rises from the smoking ruins.

And how exactly would it rise? And why would we think it would be better afterward? How long will that take? How much pain are we willing to doom our children and grandchildren to before this "rise", whatever the hell it would be, would happen? Honestly, it sounds extremely irresponsible. If someone wants to burn themselves down, more power to them, just don't presume to take me and my children with you.
