Thoughts on the Inane Political Reaction to San Bernardino

This apparently coordinated, or at least herd-like, effort to mock people for offering thoughts and prayers in the wake of a tragedy was an odd idea.

It's like someone thought "hey, people are dead, this is a great time to be appear like we're smug condescending assholes to a majority of people in the country".

Then they forgot to send Obama the memo, so he comes out there with his thoughts and prayers.

Well, Obama's wanting to do other things as well. It's when political leaders offer up prayers and nothing else that they're worthy of scorn and derision.

What percent of people do you imagine agree with this?

I couldn't care less.

Why do you feel that a large percentage of people need to agree with your positions in order for them to be valid? You are an intelligent and thoughtful person and your opinions are valuable in and of themselves. You should stop using the validation of others as your basis of self-worth and start realizing that it's what you think of yourself that's truly important. The only respect that truly matters in this life is self-respect.

:D

In politics it generally helps if large amounts of people agree with your position and hurts if people think you are a smug condescending asshole.

But, hey, look how great Keith Olberman has done so it's not an absolute.

This seems to be lost on him. Prayers for over 355 mass shootings. At some point it needs to be wondered just how fucking wrong the NRA and the right was about the affect of allowing so many weapons to be in the hands of the people.

I'm not in politics. I'm someone stating an opinion about politicians.

Tip: when people offer thoughts and prayers in the wake of a tragedy they are generally not suggesting the thoughts and prayers are the solution to the tragedy.

For example, in the following exchange:

Person 1: My thoughts and prayers go out to you on the loss of your grandmother
Person 2: ZMFOG!!!@ do you really think your fucking thoughts and prayers are going to bring my grandmother back??!?

Many people would actually perceive Person 2 to be the asshole.

Yes, and that is the entire point being made. These people could, in addition to offering thoughts and prayers, use their positions to help work towards some kind of solution to the tragedy as opposed to doing nothing other than offering their thoughts and prayers. The fact that this is all that they are doing is being used to point towards their lack of any other action. They're not being scorned simply for offering prayers.

I think Barbara Boxer is confused. Boxer says gun laws in California work

California's more stringent laws don't appear to have proven they reduce shootings. I hope they don't pass national laws that "reduce" shootings in my state to the level of her state. We don't need that level of added violence here.

Next year the legislature here will probably introduce a bill to go back to constitutional carry; like Kansas recently passed. Then you'd only need a concealed carry permit if you wanted reciprocity with another state.

But as you deftly pointed out earlier with respect to Obama, one does not preclude the other.

Hence getting all douchy about someone offering thoughts and prayers is just unprovoked assholery.

And if that's what was being done, it would be the case. If it were being done in order to point out the lack of any other action beyond this, as is the case, it would not be.

So, while you make a valid theoretical point, it's not a point which is relevant to the current discussion.

No, what's being done is gratuitously acting douchy about the phrase "thoughts and prayers".

Take for example two people:

Mr. Republican says: "My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, and I have Position X on gun control".
Mr Obama says: "My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, and I have Position Y on gun control".

If your reaction to Mr Republican is "ZMFOG spare us your thoughts and prayers, they are completely meaning platitudes".

And your reaction to Mr Obama is "your thoughts and prayers are fine because you have Position Y on gun control".

Your problem is not with thoughts and prayers, you simply prefer Position Y on gun control to Position X.

Well, if you completely ignore the central part of derision where they specifically say "cowards who could truly end gun scourge continue to hide behind meaningless platitudes", then yes, you would have a point.

However, in order to to that, you need to only read half of the sentence and then admonish them for not saying the things that they said in the other half of the sentence. That makes the point invalid. The derision for the meaningless platitudes is done in context. When you remove that context and then critcize them for making the statement without any context, you're making a criticism which isn't related to anything anybody except you is saying.

All that shapeshifting (meaning white or Jewish/american or Israeli loyalty when it suits their purpose because they are a fifth column) Jews want is to destroy white gentiles domination of America and also Europe.

So far I haven't heard the usual, "Not all Muslims are like that!!" from the millions of Captain Obvious wannabes out there. I find that a bit refreshing.

Well, out of the one thousand people who attend these guys' mosque, two of them committed an act of terror. So, while some Muslims are like that, 99.8% of Muslims are not like that. That number would change if you include other mosques in your analysis.

But you have already shown by your reaction to Obama doing it that you actually don't give a crap about meaningless platitudes, you just don't like their position on gun control.

Which is good because in polite society it is not at all uncommon for people to offer condolences in the wake of a tragedy and jumping down someone's throat for doing it kinda makes you an asshole.

Who are you having a discussion with? I don't see why you're quoting my posts when making your responses. After the third or fourth time of explaining why my position is the opposite of what you are saying my position is, it just gets kind of weird.

You haven't been watching CNN, I see.
