Dump question: but why are Wikileaks and the Russians so desperate to elect Trump?

I figured it was to make it easier for them to expand and also for oil deals.

If I recall, there are a few...um...enthusiastic supporters of Russia around these parts. I've had them on ignore for awhile, but I'm sure they'll be more than happy to give you the official Kremlin reasons.

That aside, I would guess that Putin feels Trump would be the weaker of the two. Driving a wedge into NATO is part of it, but Trump would also start a trade war with China, piss off a bunch of American allies, and that would allow Putin to expand Russian influence.

Trump's general thrashing around would be disruptive to a US foreign policy and the Russians see opportunity here. He'd be easy to play.

They don't necessarily have the same agenda, but for either to demonstrably influence the pres election would diminish the US and enhance themselves.

Russia - easy question; but what does WikiLeaks have to gain?

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the Russians have some blackmail hold on him.

What do you think it might be?

You assume that dump and simplistic analysis of the events which western media provides is correct.
In reality, according to latest leaks, russians might actually want Clinton elected, and thanks to you and other people who believe that russians want Trump it's working.

They'd prefer not to have war. they can't afford a major one.

What evidence led you to believe they are desperate?

I don't think there is any evidence they are desperate. Sure...you've been told they are...but is there any evidence of anything except they woild prefer better relations with the USA.

Some of the more extreme folk there are giving threats to elect Trump.

Putin ally tells Americans: vote Trump or face nuclear war
Americans should vote for Donald Trump as president next month or risk being dragged into a nuclear war, according to a Russian ultra-nationalist ally of President Vladimir Putin who likes to compare himself to the U.S. Republican candidate.

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, a flamboyant veteran lawmaker known for his fiery rhetoric, told Reuters in an interview that Trump was the only person able to de-escalate dangerous tensions between Moscow and Washington.

By contrast, Trump's Democratic rival Hillary Clinton could spark World War Three, said Zhirinovsky, who received a top state award from Putin after his pro-Kremlin Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) came third in Russia's parliamentary election last month.

Many Russians regard Zhirinovsky as a clownish figure who makes outspoken statements to grab attention but he is also widely viewed as a faithful servant of Kremlin policy, sometimes used to float radical opinions to test public reaction.

But there is no evidence those in charge are desperate.

I'm still waiting to see actual proof that the Russians are involved at all.

The Russian angle to me seems like an attempt at distraction.

It's true that Americans have not even semi-officially provided any kind of evidence. Russian IPs evidence is just laughable.
But it appears that they recently implied that they actually have evidence but showing it would be hilariously ironic because (don't laugh) their evidence is based on their hacks or pre-hacks of russian government or so servers :)

I agree, I think russians are just trying to create some chaos without any particular preference in the election. And the reason for doing so is that they believe that US is doing the same, and I think they have a point.

Zhirinovsky is a russian version of Trump. No need to take him literally or even seriously.

I find it hard to believe that Trump, who is rather nonchalant about using nuclear weapons and wants to get rid of the Geneva Conventions because they're a "problem", isn't a threat to cause a world war.
