California Doing California Things

A State's Governor is supposed to see the big picture. Newsom is supposed to weigh the costs and the benefits of policies and make the decision that benefits his state the most.

What's so terrible about the State loaning money to the agencies that run the public transit system so they can continue to provide their services to the people who rely on them?

Nothing, in principle. Whether it was money well spent will depend on how BART spends it, and whether issues that lead to low passenger volumes persist.

Newsom is useless

Sacramento Sheriff Jim Cooper slammed California Governor Gavin Newsom’s “elderly parole program” Monday, which is allowing David Funston, a serial child rapist to be released from prison. Funston terrorized Sacramento neighborhoods by luring very young children with candy. He kidnapped, brutalized and raped children as young as age 3, then would toss them to the side of the road when he was done. A judge called him “the monster parents fear the most.” Thanks to Gov. Gavin Newsom, Funston will be on the streets again. Gavin Newsom has emptied the prisons of these violent convicted criminal pedophiles into your neighborhoods. Sheriff Jim Cooper is right to be furious.

'What in the hell is going on in California?': Sheriff says after parole granted to convicted child kidnapper and molester
NBC 13 said:
Cooper said Funston preyed on children in the Sacramento area in 1995 and 1996 and targeted eight victims — seven girls and one boy — between the ages of 3 and 7.
“He lured them with candy, Barbie dolls, toys, and abused these kids horrifically, horrifically,” Cooper said.
He said Funston was convicted of 16 counts of kidnapping and child molestation.
“The youngest victim 3 years of age,” Cooper said.
Funston was sentenced to 20 years and 8 months in prison, as well as three consecutive sentences of 25 years to life, Cooper said.

I totally agree that he shouldn’t be paroled. Did you miss the part where Newsome didn’t agree either?? Newsome appealed to the board to reconsider the parole. Read the story!

Gavin Newsom opposed Sacramento child rapist’s parole. CA law says he can’t block it

“Bureau of Parole Hearings is an independent agency and made this decision,” said Newsom spokesperson Diana Crofts-Pelayo on Tuesday. “The Governor asked for BPH to re-review its decision. The Governor doesn’t agree with the outcome.”

Bureau officials said Funston was not considered to be a public safety risk, Crofts-Pelayo said. Newsom disagreed, “but he has no power to overturn this case, per state law,” Crofts-Pelayo said.

It depends more on how much supporting those agencies contributes to the overall economic health of the areas they serve.

Businesses suffer when customers have difficulty reaching them. An employee who can't get to their job will soon be unemployed. Downtown areas can be gutted when foot traffic falls off, when people move away in order to find affordable housing, and when working an entry-level position doesn't pay enough for a person to afford a reliable car and pay for parking.

Reductions in businesses and employment negatively impacts state and municipal tax revenue, too.

There are a lot of ripple effects to consider.

Newsom and the democrats is the reason why we are where we are with this shit going as far back as prop 47 and emptying and closing prisons.

Not seeing how they guy can be considered for parole. He is 64, not 74 or 84. The whole point of prison is for people like that to not be on the street. People serving 25 years for drug offenses is one thing, being 65 and serving life for a murder when a person was 17, but serving life time sentences for such awful repeated crimes, this shouldn't even be considered.

I also don't see how Newsom and the Democrats forced the Parole Board to let him be paroled.

The quote states that Newsom disagreed. “The Democrats” are famous for doing stupid stuff but I don’t see their hand in that decision.

Yes, read the story. Newsom (with only one 'e'!) was governor when he signed that law into place. A bit useless to lament the horse escaping the stable when he's the one who opened the fucking door.

It's kind of the story of Weathervane Gavin's political life. He created the Race Reparations commission when that was popular among Democrats, but then turned against their demands. He is now saying some sensible things about excesses of the activist-driven "woke" agenda, but he was awfully quiet about it during the heights of The Great Awokening.

Yeah. Nary a Democrat in the state legislature that passed the bill, or in the governor's mansion to sign the bill into law, or on the state parole board, which consists of 21 commissioners appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state senate.

Indeed, you'd be hard-pressed to find "The Democrats" in power anywhere in the great State of California. </elixiran logic>

"Newsom and the Democrats" are the ones who chose the parole board members.
"Newsom and the Democrats" are the ones who passed and signed the law making this "elder parole" possible.

The buck stops with Newsom. Even if he publicly disagrees with it now, his (and his fellow California Dems') actions directly led to it.

I agree fully that a well-functioning transit system is very important to a large metro area.

But just throwing money at a mismanaged system is not going to fix it in the long term. What needs to be investigated why the problem happened, and how it can be fixed. Any money from the state should come with strings attached toward fixing what caused the need for a bailout in the first place.

It isn't a bad idea. The point is to let old criminals out of jail because it isn't particularly great place to live and costs the state a ton of money. The goal would be to get people who were problematic in society, however, no longer represented a threat today! I would also argue that releasing people that are "elderly" in their 50s wouldn't seem to make sense, again, unless we are talking about some gang member who killed someone at the age of 16 and has been in jail for over 2/3's of their life and they showed zero inkling of any recidivism.

Regarding the case of subject, however, I would say a male who is in their mid-60s still remained a threat of recommitting those crimes that he was convicted of. I'd also argue that his crimes were so egregious that any release shy of 80+ into a halfway house is not fulfilling any sense of justice for the victims. You can't really walk back that trust for him.

No, they don't. They created a policy that makes sense when applied in a sensical manner, and the parole board is making a terrible mistake, if the word mistake can be even used the error is so large!

Ridership dropped due to the Pandemic and then people working from home. Ridership is on the rise again now. Public Transit never makes money! It is an investment into the local economy.

Read the law. The intention of the law was to allow parole possibility to elderly (64 isn't elderly to me) who are reformed and not a threat to society. I agree with this. The parole board is interpreting this law incorrectly in my opinion and might be putting the local community at risk if this parole is finalized. Thus, Newesomeee objected to the parole decision.

Is Newsom perfect, hell no! One of the reasons why I'm a democrat is that I can support a politician and yet still complain about some of their policies. Republicans don't allow that anymore. I didn't agree with the silly race reparations commission. But the right only focuses on the faults committed by the left. What the hell. Do you think that the right has ever committed to laws that allowed a bad guy out of prison too early? How about the Jan 6 criminals that Trump directly pardoned? Newsom had fires under his watch. Lets blame him for it. Yea. (Sorry to tell you this, but you can't stop a fire from destroying homes when there is no water and santa ana winds blowing 120 mph). What about all the fires that cause as much damage in Texas? It's a conservative state, so it gets a pass. Want to blame Newsom from some failed or slow to finish projects in California. Fine. What about all the similar type of failures that occur in Texas, Ohio, and other conservative states? This will piss some people off, but government spending in the private sector often fails and is wildly over budget.

Is Newsom perfect? No, not all all. He's slick. But he's a fighter. He's not going to back down. He won't duck people. He won't duck economic questions. He has a funny sense of humor. He's an entertainer. He's similar in a lot of ways to Trump. And he's a moderate. As of right now, he has my vote.

That bold part is what matters. The best candidate in the universe in terms of ideas, ideals and intent, is ALWAYS going to lose to a better entertainer.
The first requirement for executing an agenda is to capture the office that is in charge of that agenda.
The reason Trump is in dire trouble right now is not Epstein, ICE, J6, crypto scamming or any of the stupid and horrific things he has said or done. It is the fact that his schtick is old and tired just like he is, and even his best, most devoted audience is falling asleep in their chairs.
In a wide open free and fair election, Newsom would beat him 2:1 today, for that reason alone.
