I make my own hummus but my old big blender and one immersion blender died trying. I only replaced the immersion blender and it's a good one for the price, but it does get hot when I try to make hummus and also leaves some whole chickpeas un-pureed.

Do you make hummus? Do you think a 500 watt or higher would be enough?

500W wouldn't pull the skin of a rice pudding. 2kW is an appropriate power level for an electric blender, anything lower is just pointless.

Frankly, I would go with building your own, using a 317kW V8 petrol engine, with direct drive to the blades. Might be a bit bulky, and a little noisy, for regular domestic use, though.

Depends how much hummus you're making and how long you expect the blender to last. It'll work but if you're working the motor hard (it's getting real hot) it's probably not going to last as long. Vitamix are considered powerful blenders and they range from 1,100 to 1,400 watts. They're pricey though.
You could always try the buy a cheap one, use it till it dies, and buy another cheap one. If you can buy multiple cheapos for less than the price of a Vitamix or similar.

Newer homes should have one (V8 engine) in the basement with numerous torque “outlets” around the living spaces to power stuff like the blender for humansmus.

Wouldn't this be wildly inefficient as the torque output of the motor is lost to heat and sound more over mechanical linkage than electrical connections?

This is exactly why it's more efficient to have a V8 powering a generator powering an electric motor than it is having an engine pushing wheels directly via a mechanical power train.

In this way, we already have this going on, but it's more a coal, gas, nuclear, or solar engine in our basement.

That’s why it’s great to be an American!
We don’t HAVE TO worry about abstractions like “efficiency”. Just give us the POWER!

Oh fuck. If you’re going to end up with just another electric blender, why bother? We want that direct-drive torque, so it won’t matter how much hummus or how many humans you cram into it.

If you want more torque, go steam or go home, then.
