Another mass shooting - largest in a good while, by a few victims

There's no evidence of any connection between the shooter and ISIS or Islam.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/las-vegas-shooting-stephen-paddock-what-we-know-about-shooter/

His brother said he had no affiliation to anything, religious or political.

My money's on him being a Trump follower.

That is true, but ISIS claimed he was a member over last couple of months. It is possible his brother is out of touch. Let's start with this: Obviously, the guy is crazy and snapped. Also, this obviously takes some planning to get weapons, reserve and set up hotel room for the event, etc. So that means he snapped a while ago. Someone whose mind has cracked over a period of at least a few weeks could in theory have gone to join ISIS. It's possible. Now the FBI is saying they have no evidence of that and they probably have gone through some things, but it's also a little early since we would not expect they've gone through every bit of evidence yet. They might need some more time to definitively say it's not ISIS. So, I'm going to go with it's too early to confirm or deny for now, and wait at least a few days for FBI to go through all his social media accounts, devices, and come up with a motivation and be sure he had no ISIS connection.

Let's suppose the guy is a loner with dysfunction.

It is the same old issue of guns and the result of having a society saturated with them.

But to some you take away their gun, and even though nobody has ever threatened them, they feel frightened.

i realized on the drive to work today that this won't result in even a conversation about gun laws or the proliferation of firearms in the US, but it will almost definitely result in insane and aggravating security measures to enter hotels from now on.

Since it's a 64 year old, retired white male, whose motivations are unknown...

anyone want to speculate as to why he did it?

Voices. Drugs. Anger at increasing socioeconomic inequality. Anger at increasing socioeconomic equality.

Mental illness.
Bad break up. Seriously. His female roommate seems to have left the country. Possibly if she had not fled, it would have been a simple murder suicide instead of mass murder/ suicide.

Oh and mental illness.

His gf is poc, maybe he hated whites.

She doesn't have a traditional spelling of first name Mary. That means she comes from a criminal culture. So if someone was reading her resume and came across her name "Marylou" they might not call her back. It's totally legitimate.

The father of the gunman behind the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history robbed a string of banks in Arizona, escaped prison in Texas and tried to start a new life as the manager of a bingo parlor in Oregon, according to historical newspaper articles.

Eric, the brother of Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock, who killed at least 50 people from his hotel room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino late Sunday, told the Orlando Sentinel that their father was Benjamin Hoskins Paddock.

The elder Paddock, born in Wisconsin in 1926, had a host of other fake names and nicknames, including “Big Daddy” and “Old Baldy," and was on the FBI’s Top Ten Most Wanted list from 1969 to 1977.

Paddock was indicted in 1960 on three counts of robbing Phoenix branches of Valley National Bank, the Arizona Republic reported on Oct. 6 that year. He was accused of stealing close to $25,000 and was caught in the summer of 1960 by FBI agents after returning to Arizona from Las Vegas.

The 6-foot-4, 245-pound Paddock was convicted and slapped with a 20-year prison sentence, but the lengthy jail term was cut short when he busted out of a federal prison in Texas in 1969, the Eugene Register-Guard reported.

An escaped federal prisoner poster issued by the FBI at the time said Paddock was “diagnosed as psychopathic” and “reportedly has suicidal tendencies and should be considered armed and dangerous.”

Through either nature or nurture, such psychopathy could have been passed to his son.

In other news, the ghosts of the 58 dead would convert to atheism, if they existed, but they don't.

But fully automatics, which this guy appeared to have used, are already heavily restricted and society is not saturated with them. They are essentially forbidden. If he used this, which it seems he did, then he didn't get them from a gun shop, and most black market firearms are the same firearms (albeit unrecorded) of the ones in the gun shops.

Society is not saturated with fully automatic firearms.

Machine guns made prior to the cutoff date in 1986 remain legal but highly expensive—typically running in the five figures—and are tracked closely and individually by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. According to the NRA, the state of Nevada, where the shooting occurred and where Paddock reportedly lived, does not impose any further restrictions on legally owned machine guns. There are reportedly around 193,000 pre-cutoff machine guns in legal ownership nationwide, and special events around the country offer gun enthusiasts space to celebrate and fire these weapons.

Last time I was at a gun range, in Pigeon Forge TN, there was a guy shooting a sub machine gun. Oak Ridge is nearby, so I figured he was a fed from there.

On the bright side, we finally have proof of God.

“I was agnostic going into that concert and I’m a firm believer in God now,” Benge told CNN on Monday morning. “Because there’s no way that all of that happened and that I made it and I was blessed enough to still be here alive talking to you today.”

Glad that's settled.

Be careful.

If that's "the bright side", all I can say is we're doomed.

Like terrorism, this is a part of the world's landscape now, and we'll probably be hearing about these trash fires for the rest of our lives.

In a world that makes sense, this topic shouldn't need a thread or discussion, so the problem isn't knowing what's right, the problem is the world we're currently living in.

Society is saturated with educated men and women who have knowledge on how to modify mechanical stuff with the right tools.

If I had access to technology, I'd be building fully auto railguns for fun, and scaring religious people with them... for fun, and scaring corrupt politicians for the greater good.

Don't despair, Jason - help is on the way.
Okay, so it looks like it "only" enables 5 or so rounds per second, vs the 10+ rounds per second of a "real" automatic. But that's likely to "improve".

Sure sounds like fully auto on the videos. First time I watched, I thought it was a helicopter.

The sheer volume of fully legal and unrestricted guns and transfer of guns that are nearly identical to fully auto rifles is what allows the estimated half million fully auto weapons in citizens hands to be possessed and transferred easily with no realistic hope of eliminating them. This is just like the fact that the massively unrestricted buying and selling of legal guns makes it guaranteed that millions of guns will be deliberately transferred by "law abiding citizens" into the secondary black market and the hands of criminals and the mentally unstable, often without having the break any laws to do so.

Almost all guns used to murder people start life as legally made, legally sold, and legally owned guns, and only a small % were stolen from legal possessors, but rather were sold or give by them into the black market.

Finally, A semi-auto rifle in that situation would still have caused numerous deaths.

Nearly identical. NEARLY.

Read what Horatio wrote in post #72. Fully autos are very expensive and heavily tracked.
