In the military, at any command, people in a given department hang out together. Engineering with engineering, weapons with weapons, cooks with cooks.
If any such collective was all white, or all black, or all Philippine, no one blinked. Or if a division was multiracial, not one blink at the group. Just looked at them, recognized 'A-gang' or 'seamen gang' and not another thought.
Also, everyone on the softball team hung out together, no matter their department, no one cared if it happened that everyone on the team was or was not white.
The officers hung together, but they were the O-gang anyway.
The goats (chief petty officers) hung out.
The video gamers, the D&D gang, the Christains, both Mormons, and the people with a shared interest in the Amazon Woman Porn hung out in the E&E space and no one looked too closely.
Group after group after group had one or more shared interests or backgrounds or duties or told really really specialized jokes (only FTBs, for example, laughed at my joke with the punchline 'he thought it was in the SSPINST 9100!' ), and no one examined it closely.
For some reason, the submaine community does not attract many black volunteers. So, i have made patrols where there were as few as six blacks in the entire crew.
They often hung out together.
I noticed, figured an interest or background i did not share, never thought much about it, same as a group of sonarmen, or Baptists, or chiefs.
But, yeah, some people got quite uncomfortable at the thought that some five or six guys were on the mess decks, talking, and the only connection the viewer could percieve was color.
No one EVER said there could not be a white group, or thatall-white groups were racist. Because with 6 black crew, and 18 divisions on board, we couldn't even have conducted divisional training for most of the ship.
Now, if someone tried to start a WHITES ONLY group, that would have been different. That would have racist.
But just a group of friends hanging out? I think most people don't give a fuck. Until you make a point of who your group excludes.
