He's humiliated because his mom told him he was humiliated.

Surely, he was not feeling put-on-the-spot by a family party including grandma, when he'd rather go out for pizza with friends from the choir. Maybe listen to music recorded in this century. Maybe go a little, you know, CRAZY and rebellious, and sit downwind of some other kids drinking a pitcher of beer.
