Oprah Winfrey in 2020???

I found a table of the UC's Mandatory Student Charge Levels, beginning in 1980 here. Let's break the increases up by governorship. Adding the Student Service Fee and the Undergraduate Tuition Fee for each year you get the following:

Democrats - Fees ranged from $719 in 1980 to $938 in 1982
Republicans - Fees ranged from $1235 in 1983 to $3799 in 1998
Democrats - Fees ranged from $3612 in 1999 to $3834 in 2003
Republicans - Fees ranged from $4984 in 2004 to $8898 in 2010

It's pretty bloody plain to see who is responsible for the vast bulk of the fee hikes. If I had the time to convert that into running percentages, the difference would be even more obvious.

Democrats have moved so far right they are useless.
The certainly have moved too far to the right. Bill Clinton started the big lurch in that direction. As I just illustrated, the Democrats are not entirely useless.

The US needs a party on the left.
My word, yes. It's not the only country that needs one either. My own, for instance could do with one of those too. Our Labor Party used to be on the left. It is still distinguishable from our conservative coalition parties, but now you have to look carefully to notice.

ETA: Also, there is something horribly wrong with the chart. The fee increases are scaled in dollars, while the CPI is given in percentages. Unless both are plotted on the same scale, that is either in dollars or percent, the lines are incomparable.

Your argument is that the Democrats are less dangerous than Republicans to working people.

That may be true.

That does not make them useful in any way to working people, just a little less dangerous to them.

What is needed is a Party that is useful to working people. A party that protects working people from the ravages of modern capitalism which is an inhumane system that sees and treats human life as an expendable commodity.

What is needed is a party that respects human life and dignity, not just wealth.

Whatever. I'll give you another example: CHPS. This is a democratic program that provides insurance for 9 million kids. Republicans don't like this program. They are trying to cut it. 9 million kids could lose their insurance. How many kids has the far left party taken care of???

There is no US party with any power on the near left.

None from the center left.

And of course none from the far left.

All that exists are the radical far far right insane Republicans.

And the slightly right a little less insane but less effective Democrats.

The US is governed entirely from the right and has been since Reagan. That is why the lives of working people have gotten more and more costly and difficult.

There is no left with any voice in the US. There is nobody in Washington with any power standing up for labor.

It is a grotesque love fest of accumulated wealth.

Not different from monarchy in many ways where all the laws are actually made by princes devised in secret to serve their interests.

In another thread, you praise Norway. The only difference between Norway and the US is that they have a larger safety net. Their party on the left is stronger that the US democratic party.

The central issue here is to ask why are they stronger. You seem to blame an arrogant American class who conspire to hold down the worker! Nah. The following reasons are why the democratic party isn't as strong as the leftward parties in Europe:
1. Religion. The working people of the US (in particular white people) mostly vote for their religious values rather than their pocketbook. You want to motivate white working people? Don't appeal to their local union! They don't give a damn. If you want their vote: you must appeal to their religion (abortion, teaching creationism in school); or appeal to their fears (BLM, Jihadists, trade).
2. Demand. The demand for labor is falling due to automation. I saw a single guy running a machine chop down 5 acres of trees over two days.
3. Age. Most of the unskilled labor are entry level jobs filled by young workers out of high school. Young people don't vote. They don't care. So they get screwed most of the time. But as they age, they go to school, learn trades, develop skills, go into higher skilled jobs and management, then they become conservative.

For whatever reason, people on the left just do not vote as well as people on the right. You blame the democratic party for this. But it's something much deeper.

Wages have been stagnant for over 50 years.

Benefits have dropped. The idea of having a pension has become a distant memory.

Capitalism as it exists is a dictatorial despotic system.

When despots have power they do not share.

<sigh> Did you read my post? Please put away that dusty red scare handbook. Let's look at the real world. What is the difference between Norway and the US?

What is the difference between laws being made in private by some Prince and laws made in private by corporate "leaders"?

Untermensche: I appreciate your willingness to engage. This forum would be boring without you. However, it does rake on me a little when you counter argue with platitudes and no evidence. Earlier you said that Obama has done nothing for the working person. Not sure where you got this information. A link would be great.

Here's a few more things that Obama did for the working class (please notice the link):

1. Average weekly earnings for all workers were up 4.1 percent after inflation. The gain was 3.7 percent for just production and nonsupervisory employees.
2. The number of people lacking health insurance dropped by 15 million. Premiums rose, but more slowly than before.
3. The inflation-adjusted incomes of American households reached the highest level ever recorded under Obama. The Census Bureau’s measure of median household income reached $59,039 in 2016. That was $2,963 more in “real” (inflation-adjusted) dollars than in 2008, for an overall gain of 5.3 percent.

Obamacare forced people to buy insurance.

It was a huge burden on millions of working people.

Helping the working man is not piling burdens on their backs.

My Complaint About Oprah - OnFaith
Though an individual with no government experience might turn out to be a decent president, I have significant problems with Oprah. When I wrote about her seven years ago for the On Faith section at the Washington Post, I focused on her religious (and anti-scientific) views. She believes in a variety of paths to God, anathema to many Christians because they believe there is only one. (As an atheist, I think there are no paths to any gods.) To Oprah’s credit, unlike with many politicians and televangelists, she doesn’t try to impose her religious beliefs on others or support legislation to do so, but she has long promoted pseudoscience and New Age spirituality. And in a conversation with long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad, Oprah had trouble accepting that Nyad could be an atheist and still find awe and wonder in the universe.

It really does not matter who runs for president. As long as they promise no homework on Fridays, and free pizza every Wednesday, the American populous will vote it a like and share.

Oprah: If I'm supposed to run for president, God has to tell me | TheHill
Oprah Winfrey said she’s had billionaires offer to fund her presidential campaign if she runs for the White House, but said she’s waiting for a sign from God.

“I went into prayer,” she said of calls for her to run for president.

“’God, if you think I’m supposed to run, you gotta tell me, and it has to be so clear that not even I can miss it.’ And I haven’t gotten that yet,” Winfrey told People Magazine in an interview published Wednesday.

This really needs to stop.
