The ACLU filed the emergency motion this morning on behalf of two people with valid VISAs and green cards being held in the airport.

A federal judge in Brooklyn just issued an emergency stay against Donald Trump's executive order banning immigration from certain predominantly Muslim countries, temporarily allowing people who have landed in the US with a valid visa to remain.

The historic ruling—a stunning first defeat for President Donald Trump coming at the end of his first week in office—protects anyone with a valid visa who arrived after the executive order (or were en route when the ruling was filed) from deportation under Trump’s order.

There have been massive protests at JFK and other airports all day against the fuckwad's self-serving "executive order".

Trump's Muslim ban excludes countries linked to his businesses

...none of the perpetrators of the major US terrorist attacks carried out in the name of Islam in the past 15 years have come from the nations on that list. In fact, the country home to the biggest number of terrorists who have carried out successful attacks inside the US is the US itself.

Only a partial victory as I believe it still bans people with valid visas from returning to the US who are currently outside (ie, they'll still be turned away from entering a flight to the US). It will also certainly prevent visas from being granted to those who have legitimate business and pose no threat from getting a visa as well. However, it is a good start.

So you guys are going in impeach trump, install pence, women's rights will be set back a bit, and this nightmare is going to end right?

It's also an emergency stay, so the full hearing will be later. I don't know if it applies to people who haven't boarded a flight internationally - and suggest nobody from the covered countries (regardless of what country you're currently in!) move until they get further word, just in case we have anyone in that situation.

But they're probably getting news through other means anyway.

I'm wondering can he make to midterms.

He hasn't moderated one bit; he's as nutty as he was campaigning.

I wonder what rage this stay will inspire.

The law does not help his case. The question is how will he take losing this case so early on in the next couple of months.

Sadly, I fear that every time a judge decides to uphold the law against this maniac, we are going to hear cries from the right about liberal judges legislating from the bench. Hopefully sheeple start waking up.

All it does it keep them from deporting the people they detained.

And note that this applies even to permanent residents. Some have been trapped in Canada after going across the border for a shopping trip.

How long before the GOP starts impeaching judges that uphold the law?

A blanket ban like this affects many who have been working productively and travelling back and forth from the USA. The US does have a problem of home grown terrorists caused by a number of factors. This figure is small but just one or two persons is enough.

The ban I understand is for 90 days but in any event the US should exclude people with green cards and who have visas already. Saudi Arabia is omitted from the list.

I also tend to disagree that Iran itself has any kind of terrorist program against the USA.

After the birtherism, the talk about how Mexican immigrants were rapists, his Muslim Registry, him mocking the disabled, mocking veterans, his sexual assaults...Trump's managed to piss off a *lot* of people and convince them that he's basically a fascist. So as soon as someone was detained for being a citizen of one of his Muslim Ban list, there were...who knows how many people ready to show up wherever and let him know that they wouldn't give him an inch.

Nobody ever cared much about the cries of "activist judges", so they certainly won't care now.

All it does it keep them from deporting the people they detained.

THat's still better than before - especially since many of the detained were en route when the EO was signed and went into effect. The main point is that it's not quite a win, although it's likely to end in a win. Also, a lot of the people who were being detained ended up being released.

This again is distorted news. The agenda is about criminals who enter the US illegally such as drug pusher, criminals and rapist. The speech by Trump was clear on this especially as there were Mexican American party members at the talk. I checked this out a few time
The Democrats should stop whining and protest by going to work every day and plan how they can win the next election.
I think that some people don't understand the difference between illegal and legal migration.
The Judges are not activists but applying the law.

Of course SA has been omitted. Trump does business with them. The seven countries that are on the list (which didn't have any 911 terrorists) all didn't do business with trump.

All leaders omitted Saudi. It begins in O and ends in L. The middle letter is I (George Galloway) :)

If I lived in Brooklyn, I'd be ready to duck and cover.

No way! If SA were to decrease oil output, prices would increase. Who does that benefit? Texas, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Russia would all benefit. Those are the key states that delivered victory for Trump. Trump pays those back who supports him, hammers those that don't.

There's something else going on. The sheer volume of multifaceted activities reminds me of a movie where multiple bombings were nothing more than a distractive smokescreen for another specific agenda.

The list of nations that the executive order applies to is based on the nations named in a previous law passed by Congress and signed by Bush II. It is being used by the crazy would be despot as a thin thread of legitimacy for his otherwise despicable and unconstitutional actions.

By next week I predict that no one here will admit that they voted for him.

I support him. He's gonna make America great again.

It looks like the people with green cards are being allowed back in.

As for Saudi Arabia--what's excluded from the list are those countries that Trump has businesses in, the places there could be retaliation. A side effect of this is the countries from which the 9/11 attackers were from aren't on the list.
