Dump question: but why are Wikileaks and the Russians so desperate to elect Trump?

Everything Wikileaks releases can be examined and anybody can draw their own conclusion.

The amount of secrecy carried out by governments is a hindrance to democracy. And as we see in the leaks it has more to do with preventing embarrassment and to carry out criminal policies in secret than for any issue of possible harm.

If you don't know what your government is doing you have no idea if you support it or not.

1) Documents can be edited.

2) They can be selective about what they choose to release. Truthful but incomplete data can convey a very false picture.

If the documents are edited I am sure this will be picked up upon. Oh wait a minute, they are not supposed to exit.
Governments should be more open and this has been the overall consensus that result in the Freedom of Information Act 1973. Of course secrets that compromise troop positions etc or military information should be classified.

You know what else should be classified? - locker room banter :)

I wouldn't call wikileaks a movement. It's Assange and a handful of his pals most likely. And given the suspicions that they might be working for Russians, do you think any potential "leaker" who has sensitive info that would put Russia in a bad light would reveal his identity to Assange? That could explain why the leaks seem so one-sided.
That's certainly could be true but I think russians are just better at keeping their secrets off the hands of potential leakers.

What makes you think Wikileaks are trying to elect Donald Trump? What saves Donald Trump from Wikileaks is that fact that there's not a whole lot left to leak. It's all out there already. I think Wikileaks are just sharing what they've got. I think it would be dangerous for Wikileaks to sit on stuff given to them, because they favour a candidate. That would look really bad. Remember, anonymous people give Wikileaks information, so that Wikileaks should leak it. It wouldn't be hard for those anonymous sharers to take Wikileak down (if Wikileaks didn't share)

It would be nice to have the GOP email server hacked though. If you read the DNC mails, just imagine what unfiltered GOP mails written by conservative extremists would contain.

What could they possibly uncover that could damage Trump more than him, in a recording, bragging about being a serial rapist? His mother is revealed to be a Mexican? He miss-sings the national anthem? The dog that he kicks, on camera, has an American flag painted on it? What could it possibly be?

Yep. Paranoia has its advantages.

If Assange was Russian leaking Russian secrets, what do you think would happen to him?

Putin pretty much says he is preparing for nuclear war with America.

I think it's a lot of hand waving, to distract from the Assad/Putin Aleppo offensive.
Or US/Iraq Mosul offensive. I really don't understand this outrage over Aleppo, seems like is just another excuse to trash Russians to me.

They would drone him :)

Why would Russia want to distract from Mosul? Mosul's being played up here.
