Dude: atheists are hated in America. We atheists are the most hated group in the US. We're hated more than gays. More than Blacks. Most white middle class voters believe in magic, and thus won't vote for those who don't.

I can't see how a Jew can be an atheist - ex-Jews perhaps. I think Americans with broader minds should stop defining themselves in terms of archaic beliefs, As I frequently say, I don't believe there is a special element that causes fires, but I do not describe myself as an anti-phlogistonist. Bear in mind that most American 'Christians' seem to believe only in getting rich.

...okay, but why was the DNC interfering in the primary?

I know many atheist jews. I think that maybe they practice the faith in order to please their family, tradition, feel better, and etc. BTW: I think that not being a "anti-phlogistonist" is pretty damn funny!

There are a lot of words that are ambiguous and/or ill-defined. Jewish is a culture, a religion, a part of a complex ethnicity structure, etc. So an atheist Jew, while probably used by the right as an insult, can be a valid thing such as a weak atheist who has an Ashkenazi Jewish ethnicity.

I agree, but this is a leaked email sent among the DNC staff. What exactly were they trying to do? How would their plan (getting someone [a reporter??]) to ask Bernie more about his religious beliefs help the DNC? Why exactly were they interfering with the primary?

Don: I'm sorry but you are falling for the republican trap! This happens everything single election for both parties. There's nothing special that is going on here. No grand conspiracy or need for a special counsel. At every election, there are a few guys at the top who decide, for whatever reason, that there is a preferred choice who has the best chance of winning the general. And the insiders help them. The republicans are probably worse than the dems than this, it's just that nothing can stop Trump, to this date.

That depends - is he really a Jew or just Jew-ish?

Judaism is a problem in that involves a sort of nationality and a religion. We can't blame Zionism on Judaism, nor do I praise Judaism for the very large number of hugely-admirable and progressive persons who still get circumcised. Like 'being' anything it must be a problem. I think, though, that to distinguish religious from ex-religious people is the only sensible approach.

Sort of? :)

I'm sure they did. Here's something shocking: an outsider will have a tougher time getting elected than a long time well liked existing candidate. Obama was able to overcome this in 2008. Trump was able to overcome this in 2016 for the republicans. Sanders was not.

Sanders actually had a higher favorability rating than Clinton among general election persons, BUT that's not the issue. The issue is that the DNC hand-picked a favorite and then undermined the alleged democracy within the party in a close primary. And was even willing to use religious discrimination as a way to promote their hand-picked candidate. Or at least that's how it seems and you've not only affirmed that, you also say it's totally okay with you.

What "republican trap?" What you are now claiming is simply what Don and others have been saying the whole time. It is the other side that has denied it.

Actually in this case, they did nothing of the sort. Oh, these people talked about the possibility of using Sanders' religion (or lack thereof) in order to swing some votes, but the issue was never brought up. Had there been ads or mailers or a whisper campaign disparaging Bernie as an atheist, then this revelation would be damning, but clearly the notion was rejected by the DNC.

Furthermore, the use of the word "interfering" is an odd choice, considering that the Democratic National Committee is the governing body of the Democratic Party. It organizes the convention and formulates the platform. They're not some interloper from outside attempting to "rig" the process.

Negative kimosabe. Some at the top of the DNC (Schultz) favored HRC. Not all. No election is ever perfect. There are many democrats who favored Bernie. HRC just got more votes, had more support than Sanders. Secondly, if Sanders only lost due to Schultz and other meanies using religious discrimination, he would get destroyed by Trump. Trump will be far more vicious. Finally, polling on outsiders in August before every election is very reliable. His popularity would have decreased over time just like with Perot and other outsiders.

The e-mails are direct from Schultz. She is one person. She headed the DNC. But she did not represent the entire DNC. That's crazy talk. Sure, Schultz was a big meanie. But how many voters were really swayed by this?

The republicans lose on the issues, they win by driving wedges in the democratic party. I guaranty you that they will do everything they can to exploit this issue. I also expect full congressional investigations. Ironically, I think that republicans are far more divided than democrats today. This is witnessed by the Cruz speech, and all the prominent republicans who skipped their own convention.

This goes into the I Don't Give A Fuck category.

Karl Rove started the smear campaign that McCain's wife had an illegitimate black baby and nobody seemed to give a shit (except McCain of course).

That the Democratic party would support a longtime, dedicated Democrat with the best chance to win is not only not wrong, it's expected.

That the Democratic party would support a longtime, dedicated Democrat with the best chance to win * is not only not wrong, it's expected.

* over someone who just joined the party less than 6 months prior who had spent the last 10 years insulting the party and actively trying to divide it.

I'm glad they let Bernie run.
Bernie did a great service moving the party left, as I'd want it moved.
But it's just stupid sour grapes to expect that the whole organization would suddenly support him after all he has said about them for years and years and years.
