A friend has expressed enthusiasm for Johnson/Weld.

I'm not so convinced.

https://johnsonweld.com/issues/

He's quick to glom onto the divisiveness bandwagon and blame Obama for things that Bush did. So he's not being honest about issues.

He claims the tax code discourages savings and investment, yet my income from savings and investment is taxed more lightly than my income from being an actual productive worker. And therefore needs to be scrapped and we only tax spending. Not corporate spending, of course, just consumer spending.

He thinks Texas is doing a GREAT job of adequately educating kids, same as New Mexico and they shouldn't face interference from any gosh-darn standards. In fact, scrap the Dept of Ed. Just let the states do that.

He thinks the invisible hand of the free market will solve global warming if we just let everyone have choices. Quote, "In a healthy economy that allows the market to function unimpeded, consumers, innovators and personal choices will ultimately bring about the environmental restoration and protection society desires. "

On foreign policy he seems to say he wants to be just like Obama, but his result will be better, because, Obama. Also, build back yard bunkers.

His issues page is so sparse and shallow one can not trust what will actually happen.

At the convention, he was booed when he said he would have 'probably' voted for the Civil Rights act.

And when he said he supporter driver's licenses.

I think that one of our resident libertarians said it best, Libertarians don't do planning.

Whenever we have a libertarian thread the resident libertarians all agree on philosophy but disagree among themselves on the policies that would implement the philosophy.

They are all supportive of property rights but can't agree on what is property, eg. whether the concept of intellectual property is valid.

They are 100% against government regulations but can't name any specific examples of regulations that hurt the economy.

Johnson is a relatively moderate libertarian. In the presidential candidate debate he was one of the only candidates who supported the idea of driver's licensing. He wants to rely on a consumption tax rather than an income tax, but most of the other candidates supported repealing all taxes and supporting government through voluntary donations presumably.

If you are looking for a third party to vote for, I would humbly suggest that you try to find one under adult supervision, the libertarians have none.

Hey, if you find libertarian ideas that don't work or you can't figure out how to implement in a totally awesome manner, it's just because those ideas aren't real libertarianism. That's totally flawless.

Libertarian joke; how can you triple the libertarian vote totals?

Lower the voting age to thirteen.

This seems to be right . I have noticed that only True Libertarian© is the one that you are talking to, all others are not true to the cause.

The best that I can tell, the libertarian plan to implement their philosophy is that when enough people really, really believe in their own personal version of the Libertarian philosophy, then truly wonderful things will happen. They don't know what will happen and they don't know how it will happen, but (cue dramatic music and a wistful stare beyond the horizon) it will be wonderful!

I am obviously losing the admittedly little regard that I had for transcendentalists.

I have to admit that the Libertarian Party Convention was definitely a Holy Fucking Shit moment. This is what their values produce? Um??

A few thoughts off the top of my head.

Right off the bat he goes after the deficit/national debt thing with the zeal of a GOP deficit hawk, but I'm reminded of something I read way back in 1993 when I was living in New Mexico (before he was governor). It was called "Bankruptcy 1995," and made the case that the 4 trillion dollar debt was simply unsustainable. That the nation would be (as the title indicated) bankrupted not just by the accumulated debt, but by the lavish deficit spending of the Clinton administration.

I think we all know how that worked out.

As for Johnson and the fact that he balanced his budget, has anyone else here ever lived in New Mexico? I like to joke that the reason they decided to test the atom bomb there was simple - you could set off a nuke in the middle of the state and you wouldn't hit anyone! If the states are the laboratory of democracy New Mexico is a dried out Petri dish. It is a lovely state, but filled with reservations, military bases, national forests/monuments and not all that many people. There are mayors of cities that have more to deal with than the governor of New Mexico.

Term limits? Does Johnson understand that there are no term limits for lobbyists and special interest groups? I understand the reasoning behind the position - our legislators shouldn't look at their office as a career - but the reality is quite a bit different than the ideal.

As for his "job creation" thing, it is a nice jab, but again, New Mexico isn't exactly leap-frogging over other states in terms of economy.

Isn't the Libertarian Party basically where washed up republican politicians go to fade into oblivion?

I can't resist quoting it because I chuckle every time I see it:

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

There appears to be no point in an actual libertarian commenting in this thread.

A point which holds true in most threads.

Full disclosure: I'm planning to sue the Libertarian party IP infringement of my patented maneuver in college - the johnson weld.
