Great news! Over 20 dead in Orlando Night Club!

This could have all been avoided if only the killer listened to his father who wisely said, "God himself will punish those involved in homosexuality."

The father is a loon.

A lot of American conservatives say exactly the same thing, especially those with Libertarian leanings--something like "homosexuality is a sin against god but people should be free." Ron Paul said the same thing about racism.

Weird twist. CBS news just reported that Mateen's apartment was broken into and police are investigating as a burglary.

I see a lot of complaints that Omar's dad supports taliban. We'll, ummmm, we probably also did when he immigrated?

Taliban did not exist before 1994. You are confusing them with the anti-Soviet rebels of the 80s.

Bzzzzt. History of the Taliban http://www-pub.naz.edu/~aamghar6/History of the Taliban.htm

Following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, the Taliban emerged as a resistance movement aiming to eject the Soviet troops from Afghanistan. With the United States and Pakistan providing considerable financial and military support, the Afghan Mujahideen were able to inflict heavy losses on the Soviet troops. According to The New York Times, the Soviet Union lost about 15,000 soldiers in Afghanistan. In 1989, the Soviet troops withdrew from Afghanistan, and the Afghan Mujahideen, under the leadership of Ahmed Shah Massoud, surrounded the Afghan capital, Kabul, and took over the rule three years after the departure of the Soviets.

By 1994 the Taliban were a significant force in Pakistan which used them to control the federated regions.

If Trumps twitter bullshit isn't enough, the rest of the Republican politicians are on full NRA mode. Really stupid comment from Rep Adam Kinzinger R-IL on Morning Joe this morning: "I know this is going to turn into a gun debate. This is a terrorist attack."

Omar Mateen killed 50 people and injured 53 more within minutes with an AR-15 he bought in Florida just days before! If he had smuggled the gun in from Syria (and anyone could show that he was anything more than a wannabe), then we could limit our conversation to "Islamic terrorism". But he - a U.S. born citizen - used an AR-15 that he bought legally in a Florida store just days before he killed 50 people and injured 53 others.

Gunmen used AR-15's to kill 14 and seriously injure 22 people in San Bernardino, CA. Twenty children & 6 adults were killed at Sandy Hook with an AR-15. Twelve people were killed and seventy others were injured at Aurora Colorado. Two of those shootings involved white men with no ties to ISIS or Islam... not even dark suntans.

If you are a hunter, you don't need this kind of fire-power to shoot a deer (& if you do, you suck as a hunter!) If you are defending your home, you do not need this kind of fire-power to do it! This IS a gun-control discussion, & needs to be.

Sure Omar Mateen is a domestic terrorist. So was Adam Lanza. They are terrorizing us by being able to kill so many people so quickly with AR-15's! We do need to have this discussion Rep Adam Kinzinger and all you other NRA suck-ups... at least as to the AR-15's. It won't solve everything, but this is the common denominator here. Not ISIS. Not even homophobia, as much as I do not want to forget the victims in Orlando.

Hey Ravensky, why do you hate America?

HMMMM.... I don't see anywhere in her post that says that she 'hates America!'

They are an outgrowth of a faction of the rebels. After they kicked the Ruskies out they fought amongst themselves for a few years.
In any case, references to the Taliban in the 80s are anachronistic.

I think that source succumbed to the anachronism.

Seems like Omar's dad supports now what we would have supported in Soviet-Afghan war. No? He also seems quite loony.

FIFY
I am sorry but I have to correct your correction, you were clearly misinformed there.

No. The Soviets invade Afghanistan and then the U.S. simply returned the favor the Soviets did for it in Vietnam...
Not according to people in US administration at the time.
:picardfacepalm:

At the time means

"These uprisings, along with internal fighting and coups within the government between the People’s and Banner factions, prompted the Soviets to invade the country on the night of Dec. 24, 1979, sending in some 30,000 troops and toppling the short-lived presidency of People’s leader Hafizullah Amin."

Dec. 24, 1979 was about ten months before Ronald Raygun was even elected President. So please, by all means, show us evidence that people in the Carter administration said Ronald Raygun started the Afghan War.
Yes, Carter started it, and Raygun followed. The afgan mess was instigated and supported by US

Carter ordered the Russian invasion of Afghanistan?

Yes, and a young Vlad Putin led the "liberation" of Afghanistan. He just forgot to bring enough attack helicopters along to deal with the US-backed terrorists and their missiles.

Carter ordered the Russian invasion of Afghanistan? Wow, that is some kool-aid you've been drinking.
Actually, he did. CIA and their goons invaded Afganistan BEFORE USSR, so yeah, he "ordered" the russian invasion.
