Another Fucking Mass Shooting At US School

If we’re going to talk about patterns, let’s at least be consistent about causation. When I discuss multi-victim shootings tied to gang or neighborhood violence, I point to concentrated poverty, segregation, social disorganization, lack of opportunity and access to firearms.
If you could combine the terms "lack of opportunity" and "access to firearms" to make a new phrase "lack of opportunity of access to firearms"
you might begin to get somewhere.
Just keep hearing of all those shooting deaths so often.

If this is about crafting a punchy one-liner, by all means. Just spare me the notification. ;) But since you have me here, I’d genuinely like to see the data supporting the claim that more guns lead to fewer shooting deaths. You mind?
When did I claim that more guns lead to fewer shooting deaths?
I have been absolutely consistent for years that you yanks need to reduce massively access to guns.

My bad, please translate "lack of opportunity of access to firearms".

Edit: To clarify, I’m not questioning your correction. I’m asking for clarification because the phrasing can be interpreted in more than one way, especially when it’s followed by “you might begin to get somewhere.” It’s not entirely clear which direction you’re pointing.

I am glad that Zipr got it.

Make it harder, much, much harder to get a gun. Don't hand thém out like confetti.
Just because you want a gun is not a sufficient reason to obtain one. They can give one a perverted concept of respect.
Don't make so many of them. Don't import so many of them.
Don't glorify them (though Hollywood would lose half of its movies in an instant).
And so on.

I’m guess
When it comes to violence, there is no race, income level, gender, or identity marker that prevents someone from committing something horrific. Actions are individual choices.

The topic is more narrow than just violence, it is about mass shootings. And if you look closely enough, you will see some common traits with the types of people that commit mass shootings. It is worth studying.

I have no issue with studying patterns. I have an issue with people using statistics as a shortcut to judge individuals. Group-level data does not determine individual character. That’s not some radical idea, it’s the same principle embedded in the nearly 240-year-old U.S. Constitution: people are judged as individuals, not as members of a category. It just isn’t always applied consistently.

I’m guessing that TSwizzle does have a problem with it being pointed out that most violent crime in the US is committed by white males.

I don't have a problem with that if it is factually true.
Sure, Jan.

Well at least some level of responsibility is coming along with those rights.
Father who gave gun to Georgia school shooting suspect for Christmas is guilty of 2nd-degree murder
WINDER, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia man who gave his teenage son the gun he's accused of using to kill two students and two teachers at a high school was convicted Tuesday of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter.

Jurors took less than two hours to find Colin Gray guilty of all charges in the September 2024 shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, northeast of Atlanta. Gray now joins a growing number of parents being held responsible in court after their children were accused in shootings.
He's 55 now. Good. This should suck up any remaining good years of life he has left.

Of course the only word in that response that honestly reflects Swiz’s “position” is the word “if”.
When he couches an easily verifiable fact in “if”, it tells us that he is in irrational denial of that reality, along with climate change, Trump’s demented insanity and the sufferability of Gavin Newsom’s prickliness.

I mean, he is "unburdened by what has been".

I guess so are his posts, his knowledge of history, understanding of the climate, even his arguments with respect to his other arguments.

I'm not exactly sure why we as a community which expects the burden of that which has been to weigh on that which is said today allow such eschewing of those burdens by any of our members, but there you have it.

not exactly sure why we as a community … allow such eschewing of those burdens
Intellectual sloth is not illegal. Condemning it isn’t illegal either. I guess that’s the best we can expect under the circumstances.

The dad is an asshole. I don't know if this police visit was before the father bought the gun for his son or after this visit. Either way, the dad deserves to be in jail.

Not merely intellectual sloth, and not to the extent of illegality. It does rise to the level of gnostic willful ignorance and gnostic willful statements unburdened by reality, by "what has been".

The strict definition of that behavior is "lying", making statements without knowing disregard to the truth. It is willful dishonesty.

Generally, this behavior is forbidden in polite discourse, not under pain of legal reprisal, but under general pain of private ejection.

When this behavior is done for material gain, we call it fraud and it IS illegal. In court, this is called purjory regardless of enforceability.

Generally regardless of the rules or handling of the venues which rule as they may, I wholely agree that it is a behavior we should (and which I do) generally condemn.

The strict definition of that behavior is "lying",
I think the actual lie is an internal process. What you are identifying is epic willful obliviousness. The righteous indignation displayed at any accusation of lying, is fully justified in their little closed mind, and it IS their mind so the justification should be accepted, and we should refrain from claiming mendacity, when sheer laziness suffices to explain. </sermon>

Well, this avoided a school, but 8 children were murdered, 10 total shot in a domestic disturbance.
They have identified the shooter.
Shreveport gunman who murdered 8 kids ID’d as Army vet Shamar Elkins who shared post of daughter hours before slaughter

NY Post said:
The Louisiana gunman who murdered eight children before he was killed was a 31-year-old Army vet who posted a picture of himself with one of his daughters hours before Sunday’s massacre.
Shamar Elkins — who put up another Facebook photo of himself earlier this month surrounded by seven children, saying he was “with all my kids” — unleashed his unthinkable carnage at three addresses in Shreveport shortly after 6 a.m. Central Time, authorities said.
Cops said he was related to at least some of the slain victims, who ranged from 1 to 14, and there was audible gasping as a police rep read out their ages at a press conference Sunday.
[...]
In March 2019, three years after completing his service, Elkins was arrested on a charge of illegal use of weapons and carrying a firearm on school property, KTBS reported.
He was just 300 feet away from a Shreveport high school when he fired five rounds at a car — precisely in the direction of the school — as it sped away, according to a police report obtained by the outlet.
He pleaded guilty to the illegal weapons charge in October 2019 and was placed on probation for 18 months. The firearm charge was dismissed.

How did he get his gun(s)?

That was rhetorical, right?
