Former Farming Leaders Warn U.S. Agriculture Could Face ‘Widespread Collapse’

A group of past government officials and the former heads of farming associations issued a dire warning to members of Congress.

Current economic conditions and Trump administration policies could lead to “a widespread collapse of American agriculture,” a bipartisan coalition of former Agriculture Department officials and leaders of farm groups warned in a letter on Tuesday.

The letter to the heads and ranking members of the House and Senate agricultural committees was signed by 27 influential figures in the farming sector, including former heads of powerful associations representing corn and soybean farmers and officials from the Bush and Reagan administrations. It expressed dismay at the “damage done to American farmers.”

While there are many reasons for increasing farm bankruptcies and decreasing profits, “it is clear that the current administration’s actions, along with congressional inaction, have increased costs for farm inputs, disrupted overseas and domestic markets, denied agriculture its reliable labor pool, and defunded critical ag research and staffing,” the letter warned.

The signatories called on Congress to relax tariffs for the agriculture sector, expand international markets, pass a new farm bill and restore funding for agriculture research and staffing.

Thanks MAGA for destroying our country in another way!

All the cabbage and potatoes up in ‘Spuds’ near Palatka are harvested by migrants. It was ICE getting a bus load of those laborers that decided to fuck with my American citizen friend Paloma late last week.

USAID was as much a subsidy to American farmers as a foreign assistance program. Apparently Trump and his supporters didn't realize that.

Or Trump and his goons don't care.

I had never given the connection any thought until Stupid cut foreign aid. When he cut the aid it was in the papers how it would hurt the agriculture industry.

And then the tariffs
And the trade war with China
And pissing off Canada
And pissing off all of our trading partners
And the elimination of farm labor by his terror squad

All on top of drought and global climate change.

I don't know if Trump could have so thoroughly screwed agriculture if he had tried.

I asked this before. If Russia had placed a 'Manchurian Candidate' in the presidency, would it look any different than Trump?
I am glad you finally admitted that RussiaGate was bullshit invented by democrats to help them win elections.
I did no such thing. A Manchurian Candidate would have a plan. Trump is just an idiot who has no idea about what he is doing.

It is still a fact that Russia provided a crap ton of help to get Trump elected.

There's a reason why the term "useful idiot" exists.

Yabut he's the best Pootey could do. About two more brain cells and Trump would have been too smart to get so easily and totally kompromatted.

The extent of their reaction to it is just "government program that helps foreign countries = bad for America" and they don't look any further than that.

You absolutely did.

Actually it's not a fact. What is the fact is the fact of democrats claiming that is a fact. They are liars.

Nope! It's just weird that what they do often aligns with Russia's interests. Which is what makes them a useful idiot for Russia. I think Epstein was mainly just a rich pervert/asshole with no political aspirations. At the very least, he didn't want to be a dictator.

Best I can tell, he had aspirations of being a "mover and shaker" for other people, to coordinate and broker deals that would consistently profit him.

He didn't want to be a dictator, but he did want to have dictators in his pocket, and to get them working together in ways that would force them to turn a blind eye to his perversions.

I'm not a farmer but I do own several farms that are rented out. And so far (knock on wood) I have not noticed any failings or complaints coming from the actual and real farmers I know that are paying my rent. These are mid western farms producing either soy beans or corn and so far no one has missed their rent.

But my personal experience still does not prove your OP is fake news. So I am going to assume your OP is indeed the truth and that leaves me left to wonder why my local grocery prices are so high while the US farmers are starving? During the same time local fuel at the gas pumps (I live in the midwest too) is really not that high. How does that happen? Where is all my money going when I go to the grocery store if it does not support first order farmers producing my food?

Perhaps the real problem might be middlemen processors who control the supply chain making too much profit? That would be my best guess.

If farmers aren't making money all my money spent at the grocery store has to be going somewhere.

A Manchurian candidate doing Russia's bidding would seek to ban fracking and otherwise hamstring US domestic oil and gas production.

You don't say.

*spit take*

A Manchurian candidate doing Russia's bidding would seek to ban fracking and otherwise hamstring US domestic oil and gas production.
A Manchurian candidate would seek to enact things that benefit Putin/Russia, not necessarily weaken America. What Putin would want is the US snipping ties with allies (we are in a trade war with fucking Canada!), becoming less involved diplomatically (stepping out of WHO,, mocking/threatening NATO, reducing foreign aid including strategic foreign aid), becoming more unilateral to help reset the foreign policy bar of nations like Russia.

The reality is that Trump's foreign policy actions haven't benefited the US, at all. Job growth is down, our economy is slowing down, or trade deficits aren't improving.
