In May 2005 local police discovered that "ritualistic child abuse accompanied by sacrifices and group sex" had been carried out at the town's Hosanna Church between 1999–2003.[5][6] The investigation followed a telephone call made to the sheriff's office in April 2005 in which a local woman said she had fled to Ohio, fearing for the safety of her child.[7] On June 20, 2005, Louis Lamonica, the pastor of Hosanna Church, walked into the Livingston Parish sheriff's office and "matter-of-factly ticked off a list of offenses committed by himself and others in his flock [including] anal, oral and vaginal sex with children."[5] Rituals conducted at the church involved the use of robes, pentagrams on the church floor, sex with a dog and the sacrifice of cats, and the rape of "up to two dozen [children] ranging from infants to young teenagers", including the perpetrators' own children.[8] Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards, a former state prosecutor, said some of the perpetrators had admitted that "devil worship was the reason for their participation."

I know there have been a lot of false accusations of this in the past that have ruined a lot of lives

Well, if they admitted to raping children then throw them in jail.

Why is this even on the list? Would the rest be understandable if not for the fact that they had:
Rituals conducted at the church involved the use of robes, pentagrams on the church floor

It seems that the writer thought the most grievous offense was that:
"devil worship was the reason for their participation."
otherwise it would be understandable.

I think more likely they're implying that without the devil worship the abuse wouldn't have happened at all.

Yes, I agree. But the logical end of that reasoning is to believe that if we outlaw devil worship and imprison anyone who "worships the devil" then such crimes would be eliminated.

I really don't care if a bunch of nuts dance around a fire and sing praises to Satin and declare their faith as Satanism. I see little difference in "Devil worship" and a Catholic Mass or a Jewish Ceremony. It is the crimes against others that is the problem. The writer seems to equate the absurdity of Satanism with crime. Maybe it is the influence of movies that makes that link in people's mind.

I see this linkage pretty much as those who link pedophilia with the Catholic church because some of the Catholic clergy were pedophiles.

Oh yeah. I'm wasn't saying it's completely logical or without prejudice, just more likely where they're coming from.

Now there is no question that children are often abused ,molested and neglected. However the elements of devil worship arose my suspensions. Surely you all remember the Satanic panic that went around the USA in the 80's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satanic_ritual_abuse#As_a_moral_panic http://www.skepdic.com/satanrit.html the ensuing hysteria resulted in a lot of innocent people being persecuted and a lot of lives being ruined http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McMartin_preschool_trial there have been a number of documentaries about it http://documentarystorm.com/witch-hunt/ http://swallowingthecamel.blogspot.com/2009/04/two-cases-of-satanic-ritual-abuse-20.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPMtVjg636E

I definitely remember. These kind of prosecutions are what made Janet Reno's reputation as "tough on crime" and got her the position as Attorney General. It's a shame that she had to put a lot of innocent people in jail to build her reputation.

I remember the incident. It was one of those stories where you keep expecting the whole thing to be revealed as a malicious hoax, but it just got worse and worse.

Sex Charges Follow a Church's Collapse

As far as I know, only one person was convicted and sent to prison.
