Sorry, but it wasn't unwanted debris. It was an apparently functional Venus lander whose rocket failed to send it to Venus.

I thought it was a fifty year old piece of equipment that failed to perform.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

The booster failed to perform. Doesn't mean the object on top failed. Boosters are mostly big sheets of metal, little will survive the trip through the fire. What's on top was meant to take even more fire than it experienced coming down. I would think it likely it would survive intact until impact.
