Ovechkin v Gretzky

Amazingly, Ovechkin has played exactly one fewer career game than Gretzky to tie the record. So technically, in a sense, he already has the record by achieving the same total in one fewer game.

So if he doesn’t score in the next two games, Gretzky gets the record back? 😉

nope, will just mean he took one fewer game than Gretzky to hit 894.

Still far short of the major-league regular-season record of Howe at 975, though.

Something that amazes me about Ovi is that he's played in an era where teams averaged a bit less than three goals per game, while Gretzky's era averaged nearly four per game.

Yes, I think Ovechkin is a better goal scorer than Gretzky. But then so was Mike Bossy, who didn’t get nearly as many goals as Gretzky because he played far fewer games.

What sets Gretzky apart from anyone is playmaking. It is an amazing fact that if he you subtracted ALL of his goals, he would remain No. 1 all-time in total points.

To put it in a different perspective, while matching Gretzky in lifetime goals, Ovi remains almost 1,300 behind him in lifetime points.

So Jagr is second then at 966. Ovechkin and Gretzky suck.

Ovi nets 895. :)

Total goals in all leagues plus playoffs is Jagr 1099, Gretz 1098 and Howe 1071.
