NFL: Chiefs safety Husain Abdullah should not have been penalized
The NFL admits officials were wrong to penalize Kansas City Chiefs safety Husain Abdullah for going to knees and saying a prayer after he scored a touchdown in Monday's win over the New England Patriots.
"Husain Abdullah should not have been penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct following his fourth quarter touchdown," NFL spokesman Michael Signora wrote in an email to USA TODAY Sports.

"Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1 (d) states 'players are prohibited from engaging in any celebrations or demonstrations while on the ground.' However, the officiating mechanic in this situation is not to flag a player who goes to the ground as part of religious expression, and as a result, there should have been no penalty on the play."

The rule should be applied equally for religions, but it's still obnoxious to have a religious exemption.

I pray to see some guy score a touchdown and go on the ground and make a gesture of raising his glass in the air and going "ARRRRRR" toasting the noodly one. Then if he's penalized, he should clothes his eyes, put his hands on his ears and go "Lalalalalalalala."

Is there some law that says pirating NFL video is alright as long as you loop just two seconds of tape? Hard to find the whole thing. I was assuming that the prayer lasted a while, but it looks like it was the equivalent of the chest bump, finger to the sky prayer of other players.

Personally, I think New England was behind the penalty as a distraction, so people didn't notice how bad they were last night.

Well, some shit was going on last night. If the omnipotent creator of the universe decided to step in and fuck with the outcome of the game, it would explain how Tom Brady played like that.

It was just awful. Not even in a "Ha ha, Tom Brady sucks and I'm glad to see him fail so spectacularly" type of awful. It was more of an "Even though Tom Brady sucks and I'd be happy if he died a slow painful death being devoured by flesh-eating backteria, this humiliation is just too much and I can't find myself taking any joy in it" type of awful.

It looks like the refs didn't recognize it as a Muslim prayer, though. They likely misinterpreted it as more of a "I'm so awesome! Bow before my greatness!" type of celebration. Any fines the guy received should be reversed and the refs who give it should offer up a token apology which they should make at least half of an effort to sound sincere.

I would have been so happy to have got the ball and made a touch down without being killed.

Having put up with Marcia getting special treatment for the past 10 years, I'll respectfully disagree. It was freaking awesome. The last time he looked anywhere near that bad was a first-round playoff blowout in 2009.

The NFL is so busy backtracking to avoid another PR nightmare that they've overlooked the fact that the penalty was probably correct. Sliding to the ground in celebration is not allowed, even if you say a prayer once you stop sliding. But they've offended enough people already this month, and their quota doesn't get reset until tomorrow.

Just to show where the NFL stands, here are two examples from the same game a few years ago, when the rules were the same as they are now. This was not penalized:

What the fuck? So does this mean it's Allah vs. Jesus fucking with the games? Kinda a bigger dick deity contest or what? How does this effect the betting pool, and what if Vishnu decides he likes American football better than soccer? Wherever he goes you'll find Ganesh, Brahman, Rama, Krishna and another 100 or so...not to mention all the avatars.

Has statistics and talent now become useless?

It's called fair use--it certainly helps on the reporting to show a little bit of what happened.

OK; but why is 2 seconds 'fair use', and not, say, 3 seconds? Who decides?

The NFL's attorneys.

Fair use applies to news reports, and there's not officially a time limit. If an amazing play (or prayer) lasts for 30 seconds and some station shows it as part of a news broadcast, they're off the hook.

...They are who we thought they were.

Goodell's a piece of scum. I can see why you'd want to hype this, but we already knew it, if you're honest.

I think you may be right on this.

Some of the rules, in my opinion don't quite make sense. In both the NFL & CFL it's legal to pull a player down from behind by his hair. If you, instead of grabbing the player's hair, grab him by the back of his shoulder pads (the neck opening) and pull him down in the same manner, it's a 15 yard penalty & if applicable, an automatic first down. So during a tackle, hair pulling is legal in both the NFL & CFL. I can understand the horsecollar penalty, but I think the same should apply to hair pulling, if done in the same manner. IMO it's probably the NFL (CFL) way of stating their disapproval of long hair on players.

A few years ago Troy Polamalu was fined for using a cellphone on the sidelines to call his family during a game.

My religion requires a highly choreographed dance routine with a minimum of 3 costume changes.

He hates America. He shouldn't even be allowed to play!

This of course illustrates the problem with a free but not secular society. Christians won't give up the privilege but can't share.

Ah well, not my problem :)

^^THIS^^^ It's overblown nothing. He wasn't penalized for Muslim prayer, but for going to ground in celebration, for which the only exception is prayer. They just didn't recognize it as prayer. IF anything, it just highlights the pro-religion bias of the NFL that they give exception to prayer, and the general idiocy of anti-celebration rules in general.
