Jefferson and Hemings: consensual or not?

She was a slave. He was the master. They had at least four children together. But she had a chance to tell TJ to get lost. Most historians believe that the affair started while he was in Paris. She would’ve been very young then about 15 or 16. A few years in Paris and TJ had her pregnant. She could have left him and kept her freedom as France had abolished slavery. TJ had to promise to free her children to get her to return to Virginia. And so she did. Of course if she did not, she’d lose all connections with her family in Virginia. Still this make me think that the relationship was consensual. It’s hard for me to imagine her voluntarily staying with her if he was just raping her.
