New research details two fatal encounters in which wild chimpanzees attacked and killed gorillas. It’s a rare example of one great ape species attacking another
Intraspecies violence, including lethal interactions, is a relatively common phenomenon in mammals. Contrarily, interspecies violence has mainly been investigated in the context of predation and received most research attention in carnivores. Here, we provide the first information of two lethal coalitionary attacks of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) on another hominid species, western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), that occur sympatrically in the Loango National Park in Gabon
 
Chimps have ben on served hunting a chimp from a rival group, killing it, and eating it.
 
Chimps have been observed flapping their arms and flying, and barking like dogs. Utube videos.
 
Saw that. There seem to be more and more incidents of violence as their habitat shrinks and the food grows scarcer. Dark times.

Pure folly, portraying them as violent when we hunt them regularly for food and sport.

Baboons were always violent little gangrapers, alas. Certainly not incapable of the complex communication and personal empathy characteristic of our order, but they evolved in an even more marginal environment than the chimps, and their social organization relies more on status than trust as a general rule. I find them endlessly fascinating, and have spent many hours observing the troop at the Oakland Zoo.

People who make elaborate claims about "primitive man" based on observations of other primates often make the error of cherry-picking particular study groups to base broad comparisons on, not realizing the persistent truth that if the primates are anything, we are most certainly highly variable in our behavioral and social norms, both across groups and over time.
 
Chimps are strong enough to rip off a human arm. They bit off fingers, apparently aware of crippling another.

A Connecticut woman pleaded for police to "please hurry" to save a friend from an attack by a pet chimpanzee, according to emotional 911 recordings released Tuesday by Stamford police.

"He's ripping her apart," Sandra Herold, 70, tells dispatchers about her pet, Travis.

With the chimp squealing in the background, Herold cries out, "He's killed my friend!"

The victim, Charla Nash, 55, remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after the chimp, once featured in television commercials for Coca-Cola and Old Navy, attacked her Monday afternoon, police said.

Nash had just arrived at Herold's house when Travis jumped on her and began biting and mauling her, causing serious injuries to her face, neck and hands, according to Stamford Police Capt. Rich Conklin. Conklin said the attack was unprovoked, but he described it as "brutal and lengthy."

Herold had called Nash to her house to help get 14-year-old Travis back inside after he used a key to escape.

While her friend was being attacked, Herold was unable to pull the primate off. She then called 911 before stabbing the chimp with a butcher knife and hitting him with a shovel. Neither fazed Travis, who police said had been like a child to Herold.

People often "adopt" chimps from the grey market when they are young and cute, not realizing that adult chimps react to solitary captivity much the same way a human child would - either extreme depression and lethargy or fits of uncontrolled violence - and are much more dangerous than us physically. These news stories seem to vary a lot in whether they portray the chimp or the "owner" as the villain, but my feelings on the matter should be pretty obvious! If you wouldn't kidnap a child, you shouldn't kidnap a chimpanzee, they're roughly equivalent beings in terms of intellectual and emotional capacity.
 
When I was living in North Idaho a Bobcat had a neighbor's pet cat for lunch.

I heard a scuffle and a cat screeching outside my door. In the snow was blood, fur, small cat prints, and larger Bobcat prints.

Small felines eaten by bigger felines. I was told it was not uncommon.
 
I am very impressed with how cowardly a family pet cat was -- when I chased her out of a room, she would *run*. Being a predator does not stop one from being prey.

Bobcats look super cute - until you see one at meal time.
