What fresh woo is this?

I have been seeing it all over. oils for calming, oils for pain, oils for job interviews and love and misbehaved children and broken bones and sleeping and "cleansing".. !?!

My son read about them and asked, "They have a scent for love? That would make the most epic plot device for a world domination themed fantasy book. Do they have an oil for FEAR? and HATE!?"

But I'm hearing about these things EVERYWHERE!

It's been a while. 10 years ago the boss' wife was into them.

It isn't really new. Use of essential oils have been around for much longer than modern medicine. I think maybe the uptick in use is due to the increased popularity of aromatherapy, an alternative medicine that the new age community seem to be attracted to.

I wouldn't dismiss "oil for love" &al out of hand. Most of Nature is strongly affected by odors and pheromones. Most mammals are uninterested in sex without the proper scent in the air, and if I sprinkle some catnip in front of my moggies the effect is immediate and pronounced.

Is it OK if instead of dismissing it out of hand, I consider the clear facts that a) People have been seeking any substance with this property for millennia; and b) These essential oils have been known for centuries. When these two facts are combined with c) There is not a single peer reviewed study showing any such effect, I can then dismiss it after due consideration.

In this case, due consideration might take a dullard several seconds, so dismissing the idea 'out of hand' is only called for if the speed of the hand really can deceive the mind - which depends very much on the individual.

Let the dismissal of woo commence!!

They were selling this in Penn Station in NYC back in the 90s. This stuff must run in waves. Just light a candle!
