DS9 - Season 7 Was it really that bad?

I just finished a somewhat speed run through DS9. Season 7 often gets some criticism for being boring. It was quite the slow burn between the initial start of Season 7 and the final half dozen or so back to back episodes when it first broadcasted. But this was the first time I kind of noticed just how silly a few things seemed to be, primarily regarding the war. I blame Ezri Dax. Her character is an anchor to the season. I like her character, but the trouble is, in the penultimate season about "The War", a lot of the season is about "Ezri Dax".

Some could say it was filler, but they had material because The Breen and Cardassian revolution was rushed and it didn't have to be. The turn could have occurred much earlier in the season as the Dominion lose momentum after the resolution with the wormhole. Instead a bit too much is packed too neatly into individual episodes. The tide of the war is also a bit off. The Breen join and things instantly look doomed, and a couple episodes later, the Dominion is pulling back... again in a desperate defensive posture.

Kai Winn and Gul Dukat in general, work except for one thing. The books. Kai Winn is asking for more and more crazy dark religious texts and then her servant dies mysteriously... and somehow the Archivist and whomever else has links to the books and knows something is up... don't raise any red flags? Her servant didn't tell anyone that he discovered the guy was Gul Dukat... he didn't even bother to get security to arrest him? None of that makes sense.

Sisko's final triumph over the Pah-wraith always felt quite a bit contrived. I'm stuck... oh no I'm not, I'll just push you in to the fire and that should be that. Never mind that Gul Dukat seemingly knows he is going to be chosen to be their vessel after feigning apparent surprise to being sacrifice, especially when only Kai Winn had access to information. The odd thing is that when the prophets and pah-wraith first battle, the characters they possess don't act anything like the characters, they are driven by themselves.

DS9 remains my favorite ST series, but the more one reflects on it, the more hollow it appears.

I wouldn't go so far as to say S7 was bad, but it was definitely flawed. I remember seeing a documentary where it was alleged Rick Berman was being more and more a cunt to other staff and actors so much that work became untenable dur S7. His feuding with Terry Falwell the previous seasons was an open secret amongst the crew.

I like Season 7 a lot. I've watched DS9 through at least three dozen times so I know it pretty well. So ya. I like season 7 probably more then the others. Just saying.
