The photo is a hoax.

It's originally found on page 99 of this this book from 1935. Good job, History Channel!

Is it a hoax, or was it actually in the place where it was said to be for some strange reason?

Hoax or not, that could be me in that photo around age 14. It cold be anyone.

They never really proved where they found it, did they?

Not that I read anywhere. I did read that they are investigating, however. Don't know about you but I am relieved to know that they are only ever interested in "historical accuracy." And that's pretty exciting because it means Noonan and Earhart may still be alive aboard the Flying Dutchman somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle. History Channel needs to investigate the possibility.

Well their source claimed it was found in the National Archives. I don't know that anyone has ever verified this. I suppose it is possible it was in the Archives legitimately and someone saw it and then History Channel ran with it and did an incompetent job. I would like to know if someone involved knew where it came from and lied about it.
