WHEN TRUMP DIES

If Trump dies, what does it matter? As long as the ideas he promotes (I doubt he has any sincere convictions actually, apart from being full of himself) live on, the problem will not go away.
His death, or other way of removal from office, will help as he is the figure head or focus for those ideas, and it will help a healing process if he is gone. Also it will diminish the power of many of his close associates who have been doing so many dirty deeds.
I know something like this has been written, perhaps here but what Trump has done is to hold up a fun house mirror to our nation, with the distorted surface amplifying some of our worst bits and receding some of the better part of us. By us and our Abd we, I mean Americans but I urge everyone else by to be complacent: this horror show, or its cousin could very easily turn up on your door step—from the inside.

I don’t really think people are so different from one place to the next. As individuals and as peoples, we are all flawed, insecure, sometimes overconfident, ignorant, lonely, heartbreakingly kind and generous and obscenely arrogant and cruel. Here in the US, our founders carefully built a system of governance with checks and balances, so that no one could set themselves up above the law, or not for long. We did not dream that a petty ignorant fool could so appeal to enough individuals to gain such power. I think that I mostly believe that Trump has been cultivated and sharpened and trimmed into a tool to slice us apart but maybe those flaws were always there, waiting to crack us apart—not open! But to shatter us into pieces that are all closed little entities, occasionally coalescing to cooperate enough to gain some specific objectives.

Please be aware and please do not shy away from a lot of self examination and reflection.
Although the people aren't that different, America's system is; it is not a truly democratic system compared to most other nations. It did not protect against an absolute idiot coming to power, nor did it remove him when it was obvious that he was bad for America and the world.

We are a democratic republic, yes and not a pure democracy.

Are there systems that protect against an evil person being elected?

Here, Donald Trump gas been a long time coming. IMO, the ejection of Ronald Reagan marked the beginning of the decline of our educational system as the US began to be critical of it without doing anything about it except to start to provide less funding, more top down control and a lot more distrust.

The capture of the US hostages in Moran was timed very conveniently to help elect Reagan as well.

the announced diagnosis was met with a big ‘no shit’ from me.
I must have missed the denials. Or, more likely, everyone I knew at the time was well aware of, and tired of, Ronnie Raygun’s dementia. The ultimate announcement might as well have been about the wetness of water. But Trump’s case makes Ronnie’s malady look like a common cold.
Trump is in very dire shape, and consciously or not, he is trying to render the United States as ruined as he is.

More than that, I think. Trump serves as a shield for so many scumbags, that his disappearance from the stage will produce a cacophony of cockroaches scurrying out of the light, as the inimitable cloak of Trump darkness is lifted from their criminal activities.

Yeah, prison will great diminish the power of those “associates”.

In Australia and most other nations, theoretically it is possible an evil person could get elected, but it is unlikely, and if it ever did occur there are easy, simple and effective ways to remove them from power. Also the role of head of state and head of government are not combined in one person as it is with USA. Most nations have a president or monarch AND a prime minister; this helps restrain an overbearing head of government.

There are easy, effective and simple ways to remove POTUS here, as well. Unfortunately, impeachment annd conviction rely upon the ethics of legislators who are recently too motivated by love of power and money.

Our biggest downfall has been the Citizens United decision which treats corporations as citizens whose First Amendment Rights to free speech extend to political expenditures. This lead to unlimited spending by corporations and unions and ultimately ylthecruse of Super PACs and so called dark money.

See? The Bible was right: Money is the root of all evil.

I urge other countries not to make the same mistake! Keep money out of elections!

The LOVE OF money is the root of all evil, is the quote. Some translations say, the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.

…there are easy, simple and effective ways to remove them from power.

We have a 2nd Amendment too, but for some reason it always seems to come into play at the wrong time.
No guns required. Our ways are bureaucratic (Parliament, Cabinet, courts, Governor-General) methods, and sometimes pressure from media and public.

Well, SI, you guys are blessed to not have a maniacal demented malevolent rapist fraud wreaking havoc upon your Country and the world while a hapless congress of opportunistic sycophants cheer him on …
My apologies that you have to inhabit a world under assault by our psychotic moron.

It's the cult of personality that will very quickly disappear along with him.

To them, he's exciting, funny, risky in a good way, etc. Also, there's simply no one who can duplicate who he is. He appeals to the absolute worst feelings, instincts, and resentments in people, which makes his psychopathy so refreshing to so many.

He doesn't even bother to feign sympathy for the downtrodden. In the past even our worst politicians at least gave lip service and passed hollow bills in attempts to cull favor with the public. Trump simply doesn't give a shit and his anger and apathy is readily apparent.

Anyway, without Trump, a significant portion of GOP voters will stop showing up. The unfortunate comp to that is that Dem voters will likely do the same in equal numbers due to complacency and a misguided belief that the worst is behind us.

Have you forgotten how Engadine shits-his-pants tried to consolidate power into the Prime Minister's office during covid?

Yeah I know that he didn't get away with it, but our system isn't as secure as you or I would like.

I only thought of Scomo and potato head after I had already finished the day. For non-Australians, Australia had a semi-evil PM Scott Morrison (Scomo), but with a lower death toll (with his notorious RoboDebt scheme that had features in common with UK's post office scandal, but even more deaths) than Trump, until he was defeated by the Labor Party; then had as their leader Peter Dutton (Mr Potato Head) who was also semi-evil, and not only lost the next election but also his electorate seat.
Our system isn't perfect, but is miles better than US system.
