Yet another war, this time with Iran

If Democrats are even barely competent, they should achieve a filibuster proof Congress in November. I have complete confidence in their leadership fucking it up
Your confidence is misplaced. You should direct it to the American electorate.

Saudis have Islamic dress. The whole point is to not stick out. So its actually appropriate for them to wear western dress when outside a Muslim country. But Saudis still mostly wear their Dishdasha when in the country.
Dishdasha or no dishdasha, Saudis love flouting their wealth. That was my point, not a particular dress tradition.

Because you've been exposed to media displaying that. The Saudis aren't trying to flout their wealth. But if they're wealthy, it can be demonstrated on TV. If you'd meet these people it's another matter. They all go out of their way not to flout their wealth. Every greeting is a competetition to see who's the most humble. The richer the more they humble themselves.

The whole point of the women covering up is so that people won't get jealous of someone being beautiful or having a beautiful wife. Their whole society revolves around this. One might even call it a cultural fixation. When communism hit the Middle-East it goes surprisingly well together with Islam.

And some Arabs are so fabulously wealthy they just don't know what to do with it all. Some wealth is hard to hide even if you try. It's just hard to humbly have a massive palace.

But people want to look flashy, so in Islamic countries there's convoluted ways to look flashy without looking flashy.
In Dubai for instance the tradition is to have a shitty basic suit with the left arm too short. And then the most extravagant luxury watch they can buy. If you know you know. And if you don't you will just think this is a basic bitch.
Even if I know how much the watch cost, I will still think he is tacky af.

That's a different conversation. Minimalism isn't a thing in the Middle-East. It never has been. It's always been a riot of colours and patterns assaulting our eyeballs

These restrictions in clothing go way back to Mohammed. Often the caliphs, because some are more equal than others have in true egalitarian fashion egalitarianly broken the bank to look like a prom queen. This has ALWAYS been frowned upon and caliphs have been murdered or deposed for it.
By grand viziers who want to be the caliph instead of the caliph?

Yes. And that's not even a joke. That's something Garoud picked up on when he put it in Iznogoud. Being a caliph was an incredibly hazardous job.

Rather dependent upon the weevils we're presented with, isn't it?
For example, we can look to the race for governor of California where no less than eight Democrats and two Republicans are running in a top two primary. Can't see anything going wrong there.
Wanna watch eight Democrat ass fuck each other to death? Watch this race.

Nope. I've seen your minority "Leaders", and I remember the taken for granted attitude in 2016 and 2024. But put your faith in Chuch if you'd like. Not my country mate.

I don't know about the "taken for granted" narrative. Americans have so many different opinions that its impossible to address everyone's core positions. The real deal is the American right is just more savvy than the left. They generally don't have the problem of voting for the lessor evil (the left just doesn't understand this concept!). They understand the importance of the courts. They are more motivated to vote. And they use whatever tricks (voting maps, save america act, and etc) it takes to win elections. There are millions and millions of more registered dems than republicans; and yet Republicans control every major office in the country. They control the presidency, the house, the senate, the judiciary, most state houses, most governors. Sorry for the long rant, but I'm so done with anyone on the left complaining that they are being taken for granted! Nope. Sitting on your ass and/or voting third party is what the right wants you to do. Don't be a sucker.

Totally agree. Again, the left just isn't very politically savvy. I did hear that one dropped...

The electorate is flaky. The right-wing is so easily enraged these days. Voting on issues that aren't even real (see CRT). The young vote is flaky. Always has been. The left-wing isn't quite as flaky, but they did fuck up with Nader and if they protested Sanders not being the Dem candidate in 2016. The critical driver are the non-partisan suburbanites. They shifted the election to Trump in 2024 because of economics. Inflation drove them to vote for the asshole that tried to steal the election 2020.

Could the Democrats run better candidates? Against Trump? They did, three times. It didn't seem to matter. And now we are staring the end of elections in general with Trump calling the Democrats the second greatest threat to the United States. (second source link to Truth Social)

The US electorate is dumb.

I mostly agree, but I do believe the Dems have indeed taken large portions of the population for granted. This is primarily taken the form of alienation of huge swaths of voters while allowing extreme leftist movements to have an oversized voice in the party.

There is no good reason for the vast majority of Americans to vote for the GOP, yet they do because the GOP understands that winning is the only thing that matters and to that end they accept everyone (for better and worse). Only the fringes of the left can fuck off because they make up an insignificant percentage of the electorate.

There are also far fewer purists in the GOP. They're not busy wasting their votes on people who have zero chance of winning national or even local office. They take the good with the bad (see Christians and Trump).

When one party says, "Come on in, we'll take you" vs. "Do you meet our qualifications?" the response is pretty predictable.

Where the fuck is this happening in the party? Curious, because as a liberal, I feel like I don't have a party. I vote Democrat because it is the only viable option, not because they all cozy with extreme leftist movements. How many liberal Democrats in the Senate... Warren, Wyden, Markey? Forget about extreme leftist.

Since 2004, haven't the GOP given up six Senate seats (Herschel Walker being the latest)?

Trump did better with Hispanics and black men and Arabs. Trump won because he has done what he has made a career of, convincing people to act against their own self interest for his own. It is the only thing he is good at.

For reasons I will never fathom, he’s been good at getting banks to lend him money. I think that’s all played out now so he’s grifting from people who largely cannot afford to give him the money that they do.

And why the fuck does he need that money? He has no taste; he doesn’t read or think or care about people who do.

Because you've been exposed to media displaying that.
Doesn't mean that it's not true.
The Saudis aren't trying to flout their wealth. But if they're wealthy, it can be demonstrated on TV.
They are not trying to flout their wealth, but are buying luxury cars for their sons when they send them to study in the US (there was a Saudi student like that in my college days).
Or when they use jetliners as private jets and have megayachts.
Or drop $450M on a painting of Jesus.

I can't imagine what you must think "flouting their wealth" must entail if all this qualifies as "not trying to flout their wealth".

If you'd meet these people it's another matter. They all go out of their way not to flout their wealth. Every greeting is a competetition to see who's the most humble. The richer the more they humble themselves.
This performative, but profoundly fake, humbling is quite separate from flouting wealth.
sddefault.jpg

If you own a megayacht like this you are flouting your wealth, no matter what you insist your secret handshake means.

The whole point of the women covering up is so that people won't get jealous of someone being beautiful or having a beautiful wife.
Are you sure that's the reason?
Their whole society revolves around this. One might even call it a cultural fixation. When communism hit the Middle-East it goes surprisingly well together with Islam.
Western Left also has an infatuation with Islam, but for very different reasons. They see it as a "brown religion", and anything non-white is automatically good in their feeble minds.
And some Arabs are so fabulously wealthy they just don't know what to do with it all. Some wealth is hard to hide even if you try. It's just hard to humbly have a massive palace.
They could always give it all away.
That's a different conversation. Minimalism isn't a thing in the Middle-East. It never has been. It's always been a riot of colours and patterns assaulting our eyeballs
No, it's not a different conversation. You can't claim they don't flout wealth, and then describe how they deliberately shorten their left sleeve in order to maximally flout their Patek Philippe or whatever it is. The two claims are wholly incongruent.
Yes. And that's not even a joke. That's something Garoud picked up on when he put it in Iznogoud. Being a caliph was an incredibly hazardous job.
Ah! I was afraid the reference would be too obscure.

Islamic dress is all about all Muslims looking the same, as to erase the ability to tell which Muslims are rich or not. Any ostentatious display is frowned upon.
Has anyone told the Saudis and the Emiratis? Or even the Hamas brass living it up in Doha?

Saudis have Islamic dress. The whole point is to not stick out. So its actually appropriate for them to wear western dress when outside a Muslim country. But Saudis still mostly wear their Dishdasha when in the country.

Palestinians have adopted western clothing. Again, in order to not stick out, all men will wear basic suits. With or without the jacket on (because its warm over there).

At work they might wear something more appropriate. But the point is to not look flashy.

The Hamas leadership absolutely follow these restrictions in dress

But people want to look flashy, so in Islamic countries there's convoluted ways to look flashy without looking flashy.

In Dubai for instance the tradition is to have a shitty basic suit with the left arm too short. And then the most extravagant luxury watch they can buy. If you know you know. And if you don't you will just think this is a basic bitch.

Compare it to Turkish dress, where these restrictions are much looser. Guys can look like circus clowns in their absurd oriental gear. Middle-Easterners have quite different tastes in art and clothes and aren't afraid of colour

These restrictions in clothing go way back to Mohammed. Often the caliphs, because some are more equal than others have in true egalitarian fashion egalitarianly broken the bank to look like a prom queen. This has ALWAYS been frowned upon and caliphs have been murdered or deposed for it.
So, it's only the WOMEN that shouldn't "stick out", huh? I'm calling bs on this. Maybe it has roots in history, but for women it's a means of control and subjugation.

He's not had luck with American banks in a very long time. His money comes from Russia.

All these groups tend to be more socially conservative, and Dems have embraced a very forward stance on social issues like transgender rights. They went too far in my opinion, especially when it came to trans athletes competing against biological girls and women.
In any case, the left often sees non-whites as their natural allies just because they are not white. That is too simplistic.

And when it came to Arabs/Muslims, there was also the issue of the Gaza war.

Interesting. How do you see Warren, then? Markey? I’m genuinely interested.

Yes, I’ve always found it to be ….interesting that the GOP has been very anti-immigrant, while a large portion of the immigrant population is fairly conservative, particularly with respect to social issues. Also the fact that many immigrants who gain citizenship and second and third generation Americans tend to embrace the GOP who frankly despises them if they are not white or not white enough.

They seem like controlling busybodies. That's at least how Fauxachontas came across during her presidential run, and Markey is behind that Green New Deal boondoggle.

I found it interesting that Democrats have been very supportive of mass migration from the third world for the same reason.

We've gotten way off the topic of the Iran War, Excursion, whatever. It looks like Donald is busy TACOing this one again. Worst of all possibilities. Once you start something, you should be willing to see it through. If you don't want to see it through, don't start it in the first place.

This unnecessary war has had the predictable effects.
Petrol going up. Highest price I have paid for petrol last friday.
highest price ever for petrol.jpg

Though the flucutations are huge. 4 days earlier it was 282.7c/l!
Someone is a winner from this conflicit and it is not the small punters like us.

Prediction: Our Layatollah declares victory and announces an end to Epic Fury on or before Easter. He won't be able to keep it going with consumer prices rising and his poll numbers in the shitter. What will he have accomplished? Installing an even more radicalized regime in Tehran, one that will burn for generations with a desire for revenge.

Yup. Silver plated Ferraris isn't flouting wealth at all.
