The Shooting of Alton Sterling

1. The media is yet again focusing on race even though there is no reason to assume it is race related.
2. Don't struggle/fight with police. It usually doesn't end well. And no, even if the shooting turns out to be unjustified (and of course that is still a possibility as we do not know everything) it still was a bad idea to resist. Police going to prison is not going to bring him back from the dead.
2a. Especially if you have a gun. The police were called because he threatened somebody with said gun.
2b. Red shirt? He was tempting fate.
3. Selling CDs/DVDs out of his trunk? Did he have a license for that? Were they pirated or genuine?

He was a possibly armed thug and had it coming, the press is just trying to make him into an angel. The payout to his family will be unfair (and premature). You just think blacks can't be racist. The world is a better place.

I forget anything?

NYC cops aren't exactly known for being the kindest, yet I can't recall a single case where a person who was selling pirated DVDs was shot and killed. And NYC, there are a lot of those people.

He was a possibly armed thug and had it coming,
We was armed for sure and was apparently threatening somebody with a gun before police came.
He appears to have been, perhaps not exactly a thug, but a person in possession of a substantial criminal record nevertheless.
NY Daily News said:
Sterling was a registered sex offender, after a 2000 conviction for carnal knowledge of a juvenile, records show. The circumstances of the case were not immediately clear. Records say he was released for his offense in October 2004.
He was previously arrested for aggravated battery, criminal damage to property, unauthorized entry and domestic abuse battery, records show. In 2009, he was sentenced to five years in prison for marijuana possession and for carrying an illegal weapon with a controlled dangerous substance.
Family members said he was on probation when he died and would not have been allowed to carry a gun.
Who was Alton Sterling? What we know so far about the man killed by Baton Rouge police
the press is just trying to make him into an angel.
Remains to be seen. Although media is already starting to form the "he was a good guy" narrative.
The payout to his family will be unfair (and premature).
If the city decides to give the family millions before the investigation is even complete it would certainly be that. Do you disagree? Do you think payouts should be made before we know what actually happened?
You just think blacks can't be racist.
Unfortunately too many people believe that.
The world is a better place.
Remains to be seen.
I forget anything?
Only all the #BLM talking points. :)

Well he wasn't shot for selling CDs. He was shot because he resisted and police thought he could shoot them with his gun. I am sure you could find instances of police shooting an armed suspect who resisted.

Oh and now apparently the racist and black supremacist Nation of Islam is getting involved by speaking at the press conference. Letting them speak makes me immediately think less of the family. When a white person is killed, white supremacist organizations are not invited to speak.

They shot him while laying face first into the ground with two officers atop him.

One of the only actually known parts of this shooting, and you seem to waltz right past it.

They shot him while laying face first into the ground with two officers atop him.
That doesn't show whether the shooting was justified one way or another. If he continued to struggle and police though he was going for his gun (which he carried illegally btw) than the shooting would still be justified.
In any case (even if the shooting proves to be unjustified) it's never a good idea to fight with police.

It doesn't prove it, but it requires substantial special circumstances to justify the shooting at that point.

Alright, so two officers and neither can restrain his arms?

Yeah, of course, he was tasered, which seems to have a bad case record of some people reacting poorly to. Kind of like shooting an animal with a tranquilizer doesn't automatically improve the situation immediately.

And of course, leave it to Derec to imply even if the shooting was not justified... the shooting? Are we downplaying this a little? He was killed!

But don't cha know these thugs are always dangerous no matter what the situation is. And the video does not tell us what led up to this shooting. After all, this man could have had been a zombie or have deadly farts or failed to stop jaywalking.

And the actions of the police are never to be questioned when they are dealing with "thugs". Because to question their actions means putting 1000s of police officers at immediate risk of death. Really, if everyone had just shut up about Tamir Rice, these two police officers would have only used one or two shots to subdue the perp.

Really, doncha know by now?

I'm interested in the store video that the police immediately confiscated.

A black man laying on the ground being restrained by two police officers was shot to death by one of said officers and Derec thinks it is ok because he may have been selling dvd's out of his trunk. And then he wonders why people think he is an authoritarian racist.

Where is your fucking outrage now?

Well Derec didn't quite say that. He said that the guy being on the ground, face first with two cops above him wasn't proof that the shooting was not legit.

He also didn't say selling bootlegged DVD's and CD's was reason for being killed. He was merely bringing that up as character assassination.

In general, Derec says that resisting arrest is dumb, therefore... probably fuck him.

Meanwhile, THIS GUY may possibly be disciplined by his boss...

Fairfax County Police spokeswoman Officer Megan Hawkins said by telephone that officers responded to reports of disorderly conduct and a man brandishing a gun on June 11 in a Burke neighborhood, but the alleged victims left by the time they arrived. Two days later, she says a person made a report at a station and an officer went to the same block to arrest a man, but the magistrate's office declined a warrant. Hawkins declined to identify the man since the warrant was declined.

Because actually pointing a gun at people with your finger on the trigger is, "meh," it's not the gun that's a problem, it's something else...

I bet the police were called, they drove their vehicle onto his lawn, stepped out, and started shooting... right?

Actually the 911 call was anonymous - is there actual evidence he was 'brandishing a gun at someone'?

So, I'm not sure how this bolsters your argument. This guy was taken into custody. He cooperated with police and wasn't shot.

I have seen enough police videos where they start aggressively subduing a cooperative suspect in such a way as to get involuntary motions or reflexes out of the guy and then yell stop resisting at the flailing while pounding away.

I am extremely skeptical at all resisting arrest claims.
