California Doing California Things

Shall we play a game?

You name some place in the world that has copper wire in its infrastructure and I try to find a story about thieves stealing the stuff.

For example, if you say Sweden, I have to find and post something like this: Copper thieves cut off Sweden's main rail line.

It'll be fun!

This is what we have to put up with in the fourth largest economy in the world.

Alright, more aggregated content. As a reminder, there are homeless people in other states too. Lots of them mentally unwell. Large cities, it is a problem, in general. Like everywhere in the world. Not merely in the 4th largest economy in the world.

I think it will be boring. It's classic whataboutism. We could play that game with any of society's ills. We can dismiss racist, misogynistic, criminal, etc behavior in this country, because people in Sweden or Afghanistan or wherever are doing it. We should strive to do better, regardless of what others are doing.

The poor soul on the "cover" (screenshot) of that video doesn't appear in the video at all. Is he to represent all the malefactors who are stealing the copper? There is no reference to the homeless in the vid. Should we just assume all this copper theft is committed by the homeless? Not saying they are necessarily innocent of it; just pointing out the dishonesty of the video, with the words "HOMELESS CRISIS" in bold caps and a snap of a homeless man who isn't even in the video.

As the vid accrues views (as it will), its creator, Fox 11 Los Angeles, ought to find that guy and 1) offer him an apology, and 2) give him some money. 😡

TSwizzle has this weird idea that California suffers from unique problems. Arctish is just pointing out, they aren't.

We have, but the GOP has convince people that austerity is the key to economic success. And the people are pissed off at the Democrats that the austerity hasn't worked. Meanwhile, California's economy has been doing so well, generally under Democrat rule, people can't afford to live there anymore. So in a desperate effort to try and imply that Democrat economics don't work, TSwizzle is whining about social ills... which is fucking hilarious in its insincerity.

Fucking Newsom! 4.6 magnitude earthquake in 4th largest economy. Governor can't even keep the ground still.
I was awake and just starting to get back to sleep when it hit. I thought at first it was small animals running on my roof (pretty common occurance), but as it went on, I thought, "since when have bears been able to get on my roof?". It was the biggest I felt in years. Not blaming Newsom, though, tempting as that may be. ;)

No need to blame earthquakes on Gavvy. He's in hot water with LGBTQ, oddly enough, so has real problems of his own making (as usual):

Gavin Newsom’s homophobic Grindr controversy explained

Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates after his press office used Grindr as a punchline in posts targeting conservative commentator Benny Johnson—the latest controversy for the governor, who is widely seen as positioning himself for a potential 2028 presidential run.

Saw this news story and thought of this thread. :D

Big Sur, dude?! But, yeah, its at $7 at the Shell station about a mile from my house. Highest its ever been, I think.

Well, yes. Gorda by the Sea is usually the most expensive gas station in the nation on any given day, for a host of reasons. The ceiling, not the average, of gas prices.

People there must be really tall as that is quite the ceiling.

One can be as tall as one likes, but no longer than 30 ft, which is part of how the owner justifies the sticker shock. Part of what keeps American petroleum prices so generally low is our massive national fleet of 8000 gallon tanker trucks that keeps all our stations efficiently(ish) filled, but which cannot handle the winding trip down the Big Sur highway.

A more skeptical mind might observe that, having perhaps reached the end of a 50 mile stretch without another gas station, many tourists are in no position to argue with Gorda no matter what they charge. Your classic captive audience.

For those of you who missed it last night on 60 Minutes, here is the segment aired about the California HSR:

A bunch of corrupt politicians and unions stealing taxpayer money and saddling future generations with debt for a failed project. Only corruption sees this continue.

It’s going to be a hoot watching Newsom explain this bs to the rest of the country.

In my area, ICE terrorists tried to murder a guy this morning, who they claim was a gang member, but what the fuck do they know? ICE isn't an investigative agency, why are they "investigating" a murder in Stanislaus County? Our county sheriff or the Patterson city police would both be logical choices, or if you really felt it was a federal matter, the FBI.

"Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers shot a man in Patterson on Tuesday morning, describing him as a wanted gang member who tried to run over an officer during a traffic stop. The subject was taken to a Modesto hospital, and as of early afternoon there was no information on his condition. A statement from ICE identified Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez as an 18th Street Gang member wanted in El Salvador for questioning in connection to a murder."

The CNN article is shorter, but confirms that our local law enforcement wasn't involved, or even informed, of this so-called investigation.

ICE were involved because the guy was in the USA illegally. Did you read the article you linked to?
