“Revolution in Thought: A new look at determinism and free will"

it has done a lot of good for people with specific health conditions.
Perhaps.
But if you don't have those specific health conditions You should COMPLEATLY IGNORE that advice.
And recomending such to people who don't have those specific health conditions, is irresponceable, potently harmful and quackery.
So STFU.

Macrobiotic diet
Paleo diet
Mediterranean diet

The macrobiotic diet is a high-fiber, low-fat, primarily plant-based eating plan rooted in Japanese philosophy, emphasizing balance through whole grains (40-60%), locally sourced vegetables (20-30%), and beans. It excludes refined sugars, dairy, and processed foods, focusing on fermented items and sea vegetables to promote health, reduce inflammation, and lower cholesterol.

The Paleo diet is a nutritional plan based on foods presumed to be available to Paleolithic humans, focusing on whole, unprocessed foods like lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. It excludes dairy, grains, legumes, refined sugar, and processed foods to promote weight loss and reduce chronic diseases. While effective for short-term weight loss and blood sugar control, it may lead to nutrient deficiencies.

Remember Euell Gibbons? Walk around he neighborhood and harverst weeds to eat.

His favorite recommendations included lamb's quarters, rose hips, young dandelion shoots, stinging nettle and cattails. He often pointed out that gardeners threw away the tastier, more healthful crop when they removed such "weeds" as purslane and amaranth from among their spinach plants.

New diets in the news all the time.

My doctors always say if you eat a varied diet you get all you need. No vitamins or other supplements needed.

Beef, chicken within limits. Fish, vegetables, fruits, nuts, eggs. Whole grains.

My favorite breakfast. Scrambled eggs with brown rice, black beans, and a tomato sauce.

Recent shopping. Salmon season is over, just picked up a bag of frozen blue fish. A bag of small apples about $4. I keep frozen chicken and fish in the freezer. Beef once in a while. Fresh and frozen vegetables. Brown rice, partial to Jasmine rice.

If the calories match what you burn everyday you can lie on potato chips without outing on weight, but eventually you will have nutrition problems.

A well known example is scurvy. It was discovered that eating citrus fruit cured it. It plagued sailors.

Scurvy is a disease caused by severe, prolonged vitamin C (ascorbic acid) deficiency, which is essential for collagen synthesis. Key symptoms include extreme fatigue, gum disease (swollen/bleeding gums), easy bruising, petechiae, joint pain, and poor wound healing. It is treated by increasing vitamin C intake through supplements or diet, usually resulting in rapid recovery.
Causes and Risk Factors

Dietary Deficiency: Lack of fresh fruits and vegetables is the primary cause.

It takes at least a month of little to no vitamin C in the diet before symptoms occur.[1][2] In modern times, scurvy occurs most commonly in neglected children, people with mental disorders, unusual eating habits, alcoholism, and older people who live alone.[2] Other risk factors include intestinal malabsorption and dialysis.[2]

How did this turn into a nutrition thread? Is the idea that eating, digesting and excreting is instantaneous?

I try to eat fruits and vegetables as much as possible and scale back on meat, with mixed success. I try to eat a lot of (brown) rice and beans, and also falafel as a healthy protein substitute for meat. I have read that the healthiest rice you can eat is black rice, but to my recollection I have never seen it sold anywhere. A little research tells me that for some reason (I did not bother to delve too deeply) it is uneconomical to mass produce, and is sold mainly in health-food stores.

Fortunately there are plenty of Mexican outlets near me and I can eat all the beans and rice I want, though none of them offer black rice.

Especially during the summer, as mentioned, I binge on incredibly inexpensive fruit from the Chinese street vendors.

I know bacon is crap for you but very periodically I will eat it, because yum! Once every two years or so I will grab a couple of cheeseburgers, fries and a Coke from McDonald’s. I know it is all absolutely crap but what can I say? I will sit on a park bench and eat the shit. What really impresses and perplexes me are the pigeons. They will swarm all over me to get at the McDonald’s crap, especially the fries, loaded with harmful salt (especially to them). They eat the fries right out of my hand! Like humans, many pigeons are addicted to junk food, I guess.

What really gets me is that I sometimes try to feed pigeons fruit, which is good for them (though they are granivores and do not need fruit) and many of them will turn up their beaks at the stuff. But offer them salty fries from McDonald’s and watch out!

Perhaps social conditioning, human nature and our apparent need to believe in something in order to find meaning in life, faith over evidence and reason, may be the underlying issue.

This diversion is completely off topic for this thread, but I can understand why peacegirl does not want to talk about light and sight.

I am fortunate enough to live near Chinatown in NYC, which means I can stroll down a few blocks to visit the Chinese vendors, which I do especially when it gets hot.

Watermelon slice? One dollar. And a “slice” means one-third of a whole watermelon.

Carton of blueberries? One dollar. About 40 blueberries to a carton.

Carton of strawberries? One dollar. About 24 BIG strawberries to a carton.

Raspberries? One dollar per carton. About 30 raspberries.

Apples, peaches, oranges, all a dollar apiece.

Lychee, rambutan, dragon fruit, star fruit, etc. etc. All equally cheap.

I’ve no idea how these people make money, but I sure do like gorging on what they offer.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing!

Our brains, eyes, and body are not fully grown at birth, obviously.

Newborns: Adjusting To Light and Beginning to Focus

At birth, an infant is very sensitive to bright light. You may notice how small their pupils look, limiting how much light enters their eyes. A newborn baby can see something next to them with their peripheral (side) vision, but their central vision is still developing.

Within a couple of weeks, as their retinas develop, a baby’s pupils widen. They can see light and dark ranges and patterns. Large shapes and bright colors may begin to attract their attention. A baby also may begin to focus on an object right in front of them.

At about 1 month, your baby may focus briefly on you, but may still prefer brightly colored objects up to 3 feet away. Infants are able to see across a room even at birth, but they are mostly interested in objects very close to them.
From 2 to 4 Months: Focusing and Tracking Moving Objects

For their first 2 months, babies' eyes often do not work together very well. You might notice your baby's eyes appear to be crossed or they may seem to wander out to the sides. In most cases, this is normal and they will eventually correct themselves. But if one of your baby's eyes constantly turns in toward their nose or outward away from the nose, talk with your pediatrician.

At about 2 months old, babies usually are able to follow a moving object with their eyes as their visual coordination improves. In fact, at around 3 months old, your baby may have enough eye and arm coordination to bat at a nearby moving object.

At 3 months old, your baby's eyes should work together to focus and track objects. If you do not notice this happening, talk with your pediatrician.
From 5 to 8 Months: Reaching, Recognizing, and Recalling

At around 5 months old, a baby's ability to see how far an object is from them (called depth perception) has developed more fully. They are more completely seeing the world in three dimensions (3-D). They get better at reaching for objects both near and far. They also have good color vision at this point, though not quite as fully developed as an adult's.

At this stage, a baby may recognize their parent across a room and smile at them. They can see objects outside when looking through a window. They might even remember what an object is, even if they only see part of it.

Babies generally start crawling at around 8 months old, and this further enhances their hand-eye coordination.
From 9 to 12 Months: Gripping, Grasping, and on the Go

At about 9 months old, babies can generally judge distance pretty well. This is about when they start to pull themselves up to stand. Your baby's eyes are probably their final color now. However, it is not uncommon to see some slight changes later.

At around 10 months old, babies can usually see and judge distance well enough to grasp something between their thumb and forefinger.

By 12 months old, most babies are crawling and trying to walk.

There are plenty of books on how we physically and mentally develop from, birth.

This below is nonsensical. Sounds like something I'd expect from Medieval medicine or old folk medicine.
Sight takes place for the first time when a sufficient accumulation of sense experience, such as hearing, taste, touch, and smell — these are doorways in — awakens the brain so that the child can look through them at what exists around him. He then desires to see the source of the experience by focusing his eyes, like binoculars.
It sounds nonsensical because you never thought about it.

No, it sounds nonsensical (and is nonsensical) because we HAVE thought about it.
But that doesn't make it untrue.

It is demonstrably untrue.
It has been assumed that the ciliary muscle in an infant is underdeveloped, which is why they can't focus. Lessans disputes this explanation. Every other sense is in full working order. Lessans explains the reason an infant can't focus, which has nothing to do with an underdeveloped ciliary muscle.

The usual gibberish. Did you author study eyes, did he dissect them? Did you? Of course not.
You can take it or leave it, Steve, but hopefully you won't reject his observations right off the bat, as you always do.

We don’t reject them right off the bat. We read the posted material and correctly concluded that his claims were both physically and logically impossible.

In your own words, peacegirl:

How is it possible for light to be at the eye instantly even though it takes time (by your own admission) for light to get to the eye?

Is the Sense of Sight Fully Formed at Birth?

No the sense of sight is not fully formed at birth. While newborns are born with the basic eye structures and the ability to detect light and dark, their vision is very limited and immature compared to adult levels 5senses4kids.org+1.

What Babies Can See at Birth

  • Limited focus range: Newborns can see clearly only about 8–12 inches away, roughly the distance from a parent’s face to the baby’s Stanford Medicine Children's Health+1.
  • Low visual acuity: Acuity is estimated around 20/640 (meaning they can see what adults can see from 640 feet at 20 feet) biologyinsights.com+1.
  • Color vision: They can detect light and dark, and some shades, but not full adult color vision Stanford Medicine Children's Health.
  • Contrast preference: Babies are drawn to high-contrast patterns like black-and-white or striped images biologyinsights.com.
  • Face preference: They have a natural attraction to human faces, which supports early bonding 5senses4kids.org.-

It has been assumed that the ciliary muscle in an infant is underdeveloped, which is why they can't focus. Lessans disputes this explanation. Every other sense is in full working order.
Is it? Are you sure? Do infants generally like the same foods as adults? Why does baby food taste so awful and bland to an adult?

Could it be that the claim that babies are born with fully developed senses of taste, smell, touch and hearing is in fact false?

Have you ever thought about that? Or tested it? Most parents know what baby food tastes like, and most agree that it's not very nice - but if you try spicing it up, to make it taste good to you, baby won't eat it.

The things we believe are often easy to test, but sadly many people would rather believe than know, where knowing carries the risk that our deep rooted faith - in our parents, our priests, and our scriptures - might be shown to be unjustified.

The first time we find out that our dads were wrong about something can be a traumatic event in our lives. But it's a necessary part of our journey to adulthood.

In a very real sense, those who respond to the discovery that their parents are fallible with denial can never become adults, and doom themselves to a life of infantile gullibility, and useless parasitism on adult society.

Your dad was human, and consequently made a LOT of mistakes, as do we all. Acceptance of this obvious and inevitable truth is the first necessary step towards becoming a grownup - and that's a step that you have delayed for far too long.
Of course he made mistakes. He even made a mistake in the extension.

But once they find a job and estimate their standard of living therefrom, that figure will be the one guaranteed should they ever need our assistance. This also applies to those people who are already retired when the transition begins. Correction: This does not apply to retired people. You must bear in mind that mistakes can be made in extending the principles, but this does not in any way affect the principles. This kind of mistake is equivalent to one a teacher might make when telling his students that traveling in a car at the speed of 50 mph, you would reach a destination of 250 miles in 5 hours and 10 minutes. If he were corrected and saw his mistake, he would just acknowledge it as I just did. There might be other similar mistakes, but they are of no consequence because every extension can be tested and proven in an undeniable manner.

I think that is what I essentially posed. Light hitting the eye does not trigger the brain. Vision develops both physically and through experience,

I was babysitting a rug rat for friends and had her out in the yard. She crawled towards a rock pausing a few times reaching out to touch it with here had, She was learning to gauge distance, At the rock she felt around it,

In the liming room she did the same thing when music was playing from floor speakers, She reached out trying to touch the sound as she approached the speaker.

It is a continuous process. It is probably all genetics at that point.

That's not what he said or thought. You are putting words in his mouth.

Even if I had never made this discovery, it would have come to light sooner or later because what is revealed is a definite part of the real world, not a figment of the imagination. Science will have to take the lead in affirming the accuracy of these principles before they can be applied worldwide. The truth will be very easy to convey once it is understood and acknowledged by scientists because it involves undeniable relations such as two plus two equals four, but when people have been taught for centuries that man’s will is free and the eyes are a sense organ, it becomes more difficult to break through these beliefs since the long tenure of preempted authority has confused opinions with facts and dogmatically closed the door to further investigation. However, when theologians fully realize that not only were they teaching something false and that God’s will, the truth, was hidden behind a different door, but that their standard of living will be permanently guaranteed even though they step down from the pulpit, we will very quickly get their cooperation in attaining this sonic boom.
